What's the chances there will be no replacement for the 278 leaving Brighouse to Mirfield via the main road unserved.
I bet the X78 will be a version via Elland Wood Bottom that runs for operational convienence at relevant times.

Punctuality for the 278 service is a struggle. I wish someone would try and run Halifax to Dewsbury via the A649 and Heckmondwike which I thought was a much more direct route than that taken by the 278

With the withdrawal of the 513, will that mean no more buses from Mixenden to Illingworth and Ovenden? Last time the 513 was threatened, I seem to remember a big protest and a limited service was retained to let people access Morrison's supermarket. And I wonder what the variation to the 526 will be - another route which has seen a lot of cutbacks over the years.

That depends which route the 24 takes to Wainstalls

I'm surprised at the 278 cancellation as up until a few years ago it was a half hourly service.
From experience there are (or were) quite a few workers that used the service to get to/from Brighouse. I suppose with a regular hourly train that is much faster and cheaper serving Dewsbury-Mirfield-Brighouse then the bus becomes less attractive, particularly as it serves the A644 and not the estates in Mirfield.
One thought, perhaps the 221 could be extended to Brighouse from Mirfield. This would require 1 additional bus on the basis of a 20 minutes time to/from Mirfield and give some layover time in Brighouse. It would also provide a more extensive area of Mirfield (and Heckmondwike) with a direct service to Brighouse).

I too am surprised about the withdrawal of the 278 and I presume that there are a few workers who live in West Vale / Elland & Rastrick that use the current service. The Brighouse - Cooper Bridge section has never been profitable bus territory and I suppose will have suffered from increasing congestion problems. This route has been run by Arriva & its predecessor, 'Yorkshire Woollen' for over 80 years. Those of you old enough, will remember it being route 2 which was a marathon route from Wakefield - Halifax - Keighley. It did travel via the main road between Brighouse and Elland and omitted West Vale, but nevertheless, this will be the end of an era and reduce Arriva's presence in their 'parent' company to just the 255 from Halifax - Cleckheaton-Leeds.

The erstwhile no. 2 only ran from Ossett, Headlands Road, not Wakefield. It always seemed to me a strange place to end such a long route, but perhaps it was to ensure a regular clockface timetable as the end-to-end journey took just under 2 hours. The 2 also omitted Elland Town Centre as it ran directly along Elland Wood Bottom between Brighouse and Halifax. The 255 is a poor service now compared to the old 24 which ran every 20 minutes for much of the day between Halifax-Cleckheaton-Leeds. But then the train service between Halifax and Leeds is much more frequent than it was back in the day 40 odd years ago.

Thanks 'Moorside' for your interesting comments on my notes above - I really appreciate when someone comments and even better, challenges me, on historical information! I am aware these notes should be in the yesteryear section, but for the sake of completeness will comment here. You are absolutely correct that the ex YWD 2 route ran from Ossett to Keighley and probably did so for over 30 years. My 1943 Yorkshire Woollen timetable shows it running, like you explain, taking under 2 hours journey time for each direction and this makes sense for operational reasons. However, my 1939 YWD timetable shows the route starting from Wakefield taking 2:14 for the journey time in each direction and it was also jointly operated with West Riding. I therefore presume the shortened route to Ossett was the necessary cutbacks that had to be made during WW2. Another very interesting route was Route 3 which will be remembered mostly running from Dewsbury - Brighouse - Queensbury - Cullingworth run by West Riding. Over the years, this was route was changed to start from Wakefield and at the other end shortened to terminate at Mountain, just beyond Queensbury. This 1939 timetable however, shows the service solely run by YWD and running Dewsbury - Haworth! Interesting pieces of history - this has given me a break from the 'festive' activities.

Regarding the 278. I'm sure this service is metro subsidised evenings/Sunday. Does this mean that the service could potentially be passing to another operator or have the tenders been changed recently?
... answering my own question the tenders for kirklees (arriva) services end in Feb 2019 including 278 evenings/Sundays. Be interesting to see if it will be reregistered.

Thanks 77syk7, you go further back than I do - my earliest timetables are from the mid-60s. A lot of the former route 3 is now not served by buses at all, in some cases not for many years.

As mentioned in this thread, a more regular service will be introduced between Todmorden, Bacup and Rawtenstall from end of January/February 2018. Most journeys will run as new service 466 (some journeys on 465 will continue), which will run a longer route between Bacup and Rawtenstall via Britannia. Service will run approximately every 90 minutes Monday-Saturday and will be operated by Rosso (Transdev). www.rossobus.com/service.shtml?serviceid=6969#timetableid-58527

Looks to be a significant amount of changes from February. The 617/618 appears to be getting split in Bradford which should hopefully address some of the performance issues but does mean Holme Wood / Dudley Hill lose a direct link to the BRI
Out of interest, does it cost operators to re-register services? Some routes seem to be constantly having changes

Some routes seem to be constantly having changes If the 617/618 get a split would numbers be changed like the whole 636/637 split into the 611 for the Bradford Moor side. The only thing I’d suggest is for them to leave 617/618 for the Holme wood routes and maybe renumber the Allerton Section “619”. For some form of familiarity.

They split the 607 and the new half was 608 so that would make sense.
The registrations aren't conclusive though as the one that is cancelled is also not reflecting the current service.
As well as the link to the BRI, I could see another problem splitting the 617/618 in that where would the Holme Wood portion start from, as I doubt they'd want it to just start from the Interchange without serving the city centre.

As well as the link to the BRI, I could see another problem splitting the 617/618 in that where would the Holme Wood portion start from, as I doubt they'd want it to just start from the Interchange without serving the city centre. They could route it via the 630 route,Starting in the Interchange, via the Broadway then up Airedale Rd to re-join the current route at Wakefield Rd,but could be abit of a pain at rush hour

The main reason for the 607/608 split was delay coming down Leeds Road caused delays for buses from Bradford to Thornton. Many Holme Wood passengers board at Westgate and Sunbridge Road and I don't see the same delay coming down Wakefield Road, otherwise you'd have to split the 620 as well.

Looks to be a significant amount of changes from February. The 617/618 appears to be getting split in Bradford which should hopefully address some of the performance issues but does mean Holme Wood / Dudley Hill lose a direct link to the BRI Out of interest, does it cost operators to re-register services? Some routes seem to be constantly having changes Cancellations are free, but new services and variations cost £60 each, unless it's due to long term roadworks, Traffic Regulation Order, or similar, when the fee is waived. Interesting, thanks for the info!

Trust me, the 620 does run late! It's not uncommon for 30-40 minutes wait at peak times, and I really hope First do split this route

PB0000815/504 Registered FIRST WEST YORKSHIRE LTD Route: Tinshill /Ireland Wood/Yeadon to Garforth via Leeds, Templegate and Colton Service number: 19 (19A) Service type: Normal Stopping Effective date: 18 Feb 2018 Vary route, stopping places and timetable. PB0000815/17 Registered FIRST WEST YORKSHIRE LTD Route: Whinmoor Shopping Centre to Moor Grange via Barwick, Scholes, Crossgates Service number: 56 Service type: Normal Stopping Effective date: 18 Feb 2018 Vary route and timetable Couple of interesting registrations here: - Frequency increase of the X84/5 with the pool variation proving popular. Every 15 minutes with the X85 becoming every half hourly?
- Cutting back the 19a from Yeadon considering it is pretty much empty from Spen Lane every time i see it. Waste of buses, resources and man power sending it to Yeadon when it pretty much runs empty all the way. Shouldn't of ever considered it in the first place. They should of launched an express 97 service but thats a completely different story for another day.
- 56 - Vary of Route. I wonder where and what will be happening with this route? - Extension somewhere?
