On the early morning Virgin Trains East Coast service to Edinburgh, a young guy early 20's sitting in Standard Class in full London Underground uniform apparently thought he could ride from London to York for free simply by showing his Priv document (no actual ticket). Almost in tears when told he would have to buy a full price ticket. Finally left the train at Newark Northgate after mucn toing and froing with the guard. Train pulls out with him sitting on a bench on the same platform looking totally lost.

In a way I do kinda feel sorry for him as like you said it would've been highly embarrassing, but either way he should've checked, or at the ticket barriers in Kings Cross (if there is any) he should've been asked where he was travelling to in order to avoid this situation for him

LU staff do get quarter fare on VTEC annual season tickets - in return VTEC staff get quarter fare LU singles on Oyster (but the same cap). No free travel, though.

Simple solution. He should have asked the guard before departing KGX. Some probably would have let him away with it (there's still a fair but of 'railway camaraderie' despite privatisation) but some won't. Just ask first if in any doubt whatsoever. Unless someone thought it would be a harsh practical joke/lesson

Looks like he took the term (Northern Line) into his own hands. Haha. his Oyster card got him quite far.
