Arriva UK bus investment paves way for fleet renewal and growth
13 June 2008
Arriva plc, one of Europe’s leading transport operators, today confirmed it has placed orders for its UK bus business which will see more than 460 new vehicles come into service during 2008.
The buses, representing an investment of more than £63 million, are being deployed across the group’s UK businesses in North East and North West England, the Midlands, South East and Southern England, Scotland, Wales and London.
Arriva’s group technical services director Mark Bowd said: “We have continued to work with a range of suppliers to ensure our businesses have the flexibility to provide the best local service for customers, with vehicles which are suited to the needs of the passengers and the local operating conditions.
“We welcome the developments the bus manufacturers have delivered to improve comfort for passengers, further enhance safety standards and reduce harmful particulate emissions. People considering using the bus may not appreciate the enormous progress made in the latest generation of vehicles – particularly if it’s some time since they travelled by bus.”
Arriva highlighted the joint imperative faced by bus operators and manufacturers to improve the fuel economy of vehicles against a background of rapidly rising fuel prices – and thus meet the commercial and environmental challenges faced in providing value-for-money services.
Mark Bowd added: “Developments in bus engines have helped improve local air conditions for other road users including cyclists and pedestrians. Now, as an industry we have to build on the progress to date and work to deliver improved fuel economy. This will have the twin benefits of ensuring the environmental impact of bus travel remains low while becoming increasingly important as a way of minimising the impact on fares from the increases in fuel costs that we all face.”
