The X70/770/771 timetable did for a while settle at 15 mins but Connexions have retimed away from it. With the late running due to Leeds Festival on Thursday there was a tantrum from a Connexions driver due to her vehicle not being able to get onto the correct stand due to a departing and then an arriving Transdev vehicle. Having blasted the horn at the Transdev vehicle that was on the stand when she arrived and eventually opting to offload passengers on the adjacent stand (for the 1C) she was advised by the station supervisor that the arrived Transdev vehicle was off loading only and would clear the stand but she simply abandoned her bus to the amusement of waiting Transdev drivers. Earlier another late X70 had to use the 3/X52 stand and the incoming driver seemed to be unable to judge the width of the bus as it crushed the flappy no pedestrian access sign on the end of the fence, the driver waiting to take over managed to direct her to straighten up.

I'm really surprised nobody has ever tried a direct Leeds bus along Harehills Lane and Potternewton Lane because having walked along Potternewton Lane, and from Harehills Lane through to Chapeltown Road, it's quite some distance to the nearest Leeds bus for many houses.

I note from a posting above someone stating "transdev tendering a price at a loss". When costing a quote for a tendered route the operator takes into account, wages, cost of vehicles, fuel, insurance etc. A larger company such as Transdev/First/Stagecoach may get a better price as part of their regular fleet replacement, fuel and insurance requirements than a small operator who only requires 1 or 2 vehicles to operate the tender if they are successful, Transdev (Blazefield) have a large number of surplus (or becoming surplus) vehicles which are owned so that would have been a factor in the tender they made.

Doesn't take that long to walk the length of Potternewton Lane at all. I regular walk from Potternewton Lane to Harrogate Road when I go to the local Wetherspoons. There is a shortcut to the back of the Leeds City Council building, which brings you out opposite Tesco. A bus service along there wouldn't prompt any passengers , as many have mentioned you have 12 First Buses along Harrogate Road an hour, and 12 buses an hour along Scott Hall Road.

But when your knackered at the end of a day, or when it's raining, the last thing you want to do is walk nearly half a mile, especially carrying things. Knew about the short cut but that's no good if you live half way along in the St Martin's group of streets or off those streets along Henconner Lane. Can take 10 mins to reach those streets, not a lot for the young but remember, those over 35 aren't that up for walking 10 mins in the cold, wet, icy, humid, too hot or too windy conditions this country throws up. The lack of a good reliable nearby bus is most likely why so many round there have a car!

I'm 58 and live 10 minutes' walk from town, and I'd never think of waiting for the bus, no matter the weather! If I had heavy things to carry they would likely be too bulky to take on the bus and I'd get a taxi which would be cheaper anyway if my wife was travelling too.

I'm just wondering whether the timetable change on the 62 (after only about six weeks or so) is also connected with Transdev taking over the Otley and Ilkley locals- perhaps using some 62 journeys to get buses into place? It's a bit disruptive to regular travellers' routines otherwise.
I've used the 962 a few times when I've been at Ilkley and there wasn't an X84 due, but not in the last few years since I dispensed with my MetroCard on cost grounds. I have to admit that I tend to prefer Transdev on a number of grounds- ironically (given the name) the connectivity which allows me to buy a K-Day in Otley and go walking in Hebden Bridge for £4 or a Daytripper which can take me to Manchester for £9, plus the same K-Day is 20% cheaper than Connexions' £5 Otley-Harrogate return. Paying passengers almost certainly make their decisions based on factors like these rather than where an operator is headquartered.

It's a bit disruptive to regular travellers' routines otherwise. The September timetable mentions that the 1820 on a Sunday from Ilkley will be 40 minutes earlier from October 2nd. Presumably this is in line with the changes to the 883/4.

Bit of a surprise with the withdrawal of the 966, it seems quite well used on the section between Yeadon centre and Guiseley, especially up until mid afternoon, would have expected some journeys to be axed but not the entire service! It's going to be one hell of a challenge for some in the winter, e.g. if you live in Yeadon Banks or Henshaw.

So if the 966 is tied onto the same batch as the 967, I take it Transdev will be running it? Let's hope they only use a Solo, First did run it with Darts, however with a struggle! Saw one having to reverse trying to turn left at The Clothiers pub roundabout, quite funny to see but did cause a bit of confusion for drivers trying to come down High Street from the upper part of the High Street.

In some cases the commercial service was on a reduced basis, but not always. Meanwhile this mysterious tweet connexionsbuses connexionsbuses · Sep 7 Amazingly @westyorkshireca continue to waste taxpayers money on tendered service when theres commercial one there! @ajonesmp @jameslewislab A posting on another forum describes it as comical as if its a reference to the Wharfedale service they have lost Metros tender for then how have they suddenly become commercial and if they are now going to run them commercially were they not party to the waste of taxpayers money There have been several examples of that happening in NYCC, where a commercial service was provided by the same operator after the tender was withdrawn, including services run by Arriva, Connexions, Dales & District, EYMS, Pride of the Dales, Stephensons and possibly others as well. In some cases the commercial service was on a reduced basis, but not always. Bus companies are businesses, and you can't blame them for trying to maximise their income, particularly if that extra funding is then used to support marginal services elsewhere. There are a number of reasons an operator may take a formerly tendered service commercial beyond the obvious one of them taking advantage of the council. Often in those cases I suspect the operator hasn't actually looked at the revenue on the tendered services in the same way they would for a commercial service (especially when we are talking about the big bus groups) so may not have realised the particular position of certain services (there have been a number of times I have looked at loadings on the ground for a upcoming contract & suspected that, especially as these are in areas with major competition for contracts that the major operator in question rarely won), this is especially the case where the council favours cost contracts (where the council take the revenue) and it is only when the service is threatened that a service is looked at in detail for passenger numbers when an operator realises they can do something with this. Often the service in question isn't actually truly commercial in the understood sense of the word but has the potential to do so, either the passenger trends are positive or some aspect of the tender adds cost/reduces revenue in a manner which is easy to fix to the advantage of the future of the route. Often a switch from council fare scales to commercial fare scales can make a difference and a change to vehicle used and/or minor adjustments to timings allow an interworking (to add extra income to the working for little extra cost) or efficiency improvement that can make the difference. There can also be other ways to fund services to help the transition that are not obvious and involve funding streams from other departments or solutions, in one area I know the local council had some mid-life buses that would not have fetched a huge sum on the second-hand market but have been loaned for a nominal rent to an operator in return for running what were tendered, though marginally so, services commercial which are still so almost 5 years later - you can also transfer school flows to normal bus services (the funding coming from the education department) or provide extra funding through concessionary fares under the extra capacity calculation which changes which budget the money comes from. The real question is how long the commercial operation of the service last because often these decisions are a risk, often helping the council out by reducing the number of service cuts made by taking a gamble on something in the expectation of being able to retain other tendered work to a value that makes it worthwhile, in the expectation that by some aspect of the commercialisation of the service in question will pay dividends in the future - Often this doesn't pay off and the service disappears a year or two later having never actually turned profitable.
