A CHINESE automotive giant is preparing a £200m takeover of the bus maker Alexander Dennis, one of Scotland’s largest manufacturers. Senior executives of Shanghai-listed Yutong have held talks with Alexander Dennis, which is based in Falkirk and has about 2,000 employees. City sources said the discussions were at an early stage, and other bidders were circling. A last-minute offer from another Chinese company, BYD — which already has a tie-up with Alexander Dennis — has not been ruled out. www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/article1659962.ece?CMP=OTH-gnws-standard-2016_01_23

We will end up with nothing UK owned. Give it a few years and everything will be made overseas as they gradually run down UK production. We are just becoming a warehouse for the world.

I agree that rail companies should be buying British but who many firms build rail carriages in the UK. I think(unless someone knows better) there are only 2. Hitachi Rail who are totally committed to building and maintaining the new stock for GWR and ECML. The other one is Bombardier who do build stock for TOC's but also produce stock for TFL(surface and tube). It is a very expensive operation to build and equip a factory to build train when there is no guarentee of any contracts now or in the future. As for ADL remember it was private investors money that bailed them out a few years ago and some or all of the investors may want their money back. Also I recall reading somewhere a few years ago that Stagecoach had to get regulators approval every time Alexander Dennis got a contract to build buses for that company because of the people involved in both companies

Just to be slightly pedantic, not all of the new trains could be built here.
Bombardier only bid to build the electric units. The diesel units would still have had to come from another supplier. It makes sense to purchase all stock from the same manufacturer for a variety of reasons, hence why follow on orders of electric trains for Southern have been more Electrostars from Bombardier, Siemens winning orders for new units for South West Trains, even why First kept going back for Wright bodied Volvo's for years.
