So, Hillam left completely without a bus service! And yet we're supposed to use the bus?

There may be a number of reasons for the cancellation. Could be that another route will be diverted or extended by M Travel or another operator is willing to try. Possibly the bottom line is that the service is carrying "air" most of the time and M Travel can no longer sustain the losses.

The 490 will be replaced I think by a 493 extension, it's on the NYCC final bus cuts page which you can access directly through the Dalesbus website www.dalesbus.org

The other West Yorkshire services listed will see services 402, 412, 780 and 840 continue, while service 74 between Ilkley and Grassington is withdrawn. It will be a shame if this inter-county link between Todmorden & Rawtenstall is broken. Todmorden Corporation ran Tod-Bacup then Bacup-Burnley until the mid 60s. A gap followed until deregulation when Rossendale Transport took over and despite it having many different service numbers has remained an hourly Mon-Sat service since. A possible solution maybe Burnley & Pendle running a 2 hourly Bacup-Todmorden service as an extension of their 8 Burnley-Bacup. For those who haven't sampled these parts, it is well worth the trip over a decidedly rural and remote part of West Yorkshire.

Actually it was run by Metro Calderdale (Millwood depot) right up until D Day (last operations Sat 25th Oct 86) I Actually worked it myself and im sure its route number was 593! through journeys operated to Bacup town centre while there was a series of short workings to Cloughfoot and Sharneyford. On occasions at Sharneyford reversing area it was not unusual for a Lancashire operator to join you! one morning i was joined by an ECW Ribble Olympian in Timesaver livery probably from Burnley depot or even Blackburn. For some reason at Deregulation LCC became responsible for this cross boundary service after many years of WYPTE control.

Are we sure they aren't just renumbering it yet again?

Yes!, LCC Gave notification to Operators a number of weeks back that subsidies were to be withdrawn and if operators were unwilling to run part or all of the said routes commercially, cancellations would have to be submitted from 3rd APRIL.

Thanks 'andy1' for the additional information about the Tod-Bacup route. I had forgotten about the Metro Calderdale period between 1974-1986. However (and apologies to those who think this should be in the Yesteryear section) - I have looked through some of my previous notes to provide the gaps:- From mid 60s - 1971 run by Tod Corporation Mon-Fri infrequent to Cloughfoot with 2 extending to Sharneyford - no trips to Bacup. 1971 onwards numbered 93 & run by Calderdale JOC; 1974 by Metro Calderdale soon after being renumbered 593 (mid 70s to 593).Similar timetable to above but with 3 journeys Mon-Fri extending to Bacup & improved 2 Hourly frequency through to Bacup on Saturdays / Sundays. 1986 after Deregulation run by Rossendale Transport supported by Lancs CC. I have heard from a very reliable source there maybe some reprieve for this service in April!

Thats going to be handy, could bail the train at Tod for that to Bury when I pop there on the odd occasion!

NYCC have posted details of a few changes (28 Feb), although this list does not include the majority of services that are changing following their funding cuts ... most of these I knew about already but one that has come as a bit of a shock:
- Stagecoach 80/81 between Ingleton/Kirkby Lonsdale and Lancaster is seeing a reduction in the daytime frequency and all evening and Sunday buses to KL withdrawn.
- POTD 72 is being cut back to run Skipton to Grassington only, with a reduced timetable, and 74 is being cut to 4 days a week (MWFS), with Appletreewick losing its service. The Saturday service will be improved to 4 journeys each way, but looks like it could be a summer-only service. A replacement service between Grassington and Buckden will be provided by NYCC and Upper Wharfedale Venturer
- M Travel 490 between Sherburn and Ponte is being replaced by a service operated by Utopia that reconnects through to Tadcaster.
But the one that has taken me by surprise is: - Transdev 180/X80 between Preston and Skipton is to be completely cancelled and all services withdrawn. Ah, panic over ... I've had a look at Transdev's own website, where it says We are currently in consultation with Lancashire County Council as to the future of these routes. It looks possible that a reduced timetable will still operate. More info on this soon. so it might not be as bad as all that.

steveinselby, a bit more info on the 180/X80 funding cuts are on the NYCC cuts topic under this one, info posted 20 Feb. Dalesbus are also saying a roughly 2 hourly service will operate funded by Lancs County Council but it's unknown at present who will run it.

Missing from NYCC list is the forthcoming extension of The Witch Way to Skipton.

Missing from NYCC list is the forthcoming extension of The Witch Way to Skipton. What's the deal with that one ... is that replacing the 28 and/or 29 Mainline service? All I can see on Transdev's website is that the Mainline services are going to be renumbered as M1, M2, M3 and M4 to make the numbers easier to understand ... given that there are 9 different branches that make up the Mainline network, I'm not sure how using just 4 route numbers is supposed to make it easier, given that that there aren't enough numbers to give each of those branches its own number!

I suspect the 29 (or a speeded-up variation of it) is going to be replaced by the extended X43.

Does make a lot of sense for the X43 to extend to Skipton because locals have been screaming out for ages for a rail link between Skipton and Colne to be restored so they can access trains into Manchester. If it proves just as fast as catching a train into Manchester then these locals may decide it's worth having instead of an expensive new stretch of line to Colne partly funded by my tax, but I won't see the benefit of it!
