No doubt due to the weather this stretch of line is closed today with no buses operating in place of trains. This has been the second time in a couple of weeks this line has been disrupted and if this becomes a regular issue then the government need to divert cash from other rail projects into maybe raising the track on this line. Would need significant raising in places, e.g. in the valley bit around Whernside before the tunnel as that hill's bound to have a lot of water flying off it, but there is a need to keep towns like Settle, Kirkby Stephen and Appleby connected to the rest of the North.

Didn't realise how widespread the flooding was when I posted above, seems the whole of Cumbria and border regions in Scotland have been affected so rail services have been badly hit, no doubt road transport too.

Settle Carlisle line appears to have re-opened, however no trains will run north from Carlisle until at least Wednesday.

Carlisle was a manic scene on Saturday. Trains we're cancelled or delayed. A Class 390 had to be used as a hotel overnight as no trains could run safely.
I travelled from Glasgow to Leeds on Saturday, and spent an hour in Carlisle. Awaiting a VTEC service to Newcastle (Class43 HST on annual divert). Once we got going we encountered numerous floods and signal problems and arrived into Newcastle 3 hours late. The train running opposite had to turn back as it was not safe to continue, and subsequently hit a tree after. No one was hurt thankfully. But that returned to Newcastle around 5 hours late.
In all fairness of the choas, VTEC VTWC Scotrail FTPE and Northern did they best they could in all circumstances. And I hope that the residents of the Cumbrian area can carry on after the disaster.
