Bus passenger handed £1,300 fine on £2 journey – because National Express back-dated charges for 2 years Outraged Colette Southern was slapped with the enormous fare on a route in Wolverhampton – but claims she hasn't used public transport for a year www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/bus-passenger-handed-1300-fine-6347165?ICID=FB_mirror_mainA bus passenger was slapped with a staggering £1,300 fine after travelling on a bus route which charges £2.20 for a single journey. Outraged Colette Southern, 25, was handed the fine after she was found travelling on the journey with an expired £14-a-week pass. National Express claim the fine was so hefty because of back-dated charges – the pass expired two years ago. But Colette, from Wolverhampton, claims she hasn't used public transport for a year and had to get the bus because a colleague who normally gives her a lift was off work. An on-the-spot fine for not having paid the correct fare on a National Express service is £35 – but Colette was told to pay £460 upfront.

Unless NX has any evidence that she has been travelling regularly on an expired pass, they haven't got a leg to stand on. And if they do have evidence that she has made the 37 journeys that would lead to a fine of £1300 then they should be reclaiming that money from the drivers who have consistently failed to check passengers' passes for all that time.
