just out of interest, routes are usually distinguished by three-figure service numbers in this area, but how many other ways? a) * no display b) the familiar two-numbers display still used in Leeds as many buses still had the old 2-digit display when numbers were changed in the 70s c) two numbers + an optional letter eg 66A or J32 d) * coloured blinds e) three numbers eg 101 f) 3 numbers + optional letter eg 268A g) dashed eg 42-2
* not in use as far as I know

Most of these have now become 9xx routes, but Holmfirth's Hx routes and Todmorden's Tx routes remain - along with Elland's E routes - though it looks like they're reducing in number shortly (E8-> 564, E9 withdrawn). One you've not mentioned is Hebden Bridge which also has its unusual A,B,C,D and E routes (which also used to be Hx routes and when they changed initially went as far as I).

No display routes could include roadwork shuttle services as I'm sure some have been unnumbered and ran by taxi companies

Here's a little question for everyone!
What route numbers are used by the same operator, but in different city (/town), and run on completly different routes! Let see how many we can get!

X11 Leeds to Pudsey and Parkhead to Huddersfield 80 Bramley - Old Farnley and Huddersfield to Clayton West 92 Kirkstall Brewery - Clarence Dock and Holmfirth to Barnsley Does the last one count? Sticking with Stagecoach Yorkshire: 44 Pogmoor circular, Rotherham - Chapeltown, Chesterfield - Sheffield. 43 Pogmoor circular, Chesterfield - Sheffield.

Arriva North East used to have two 29s, one running from Middlesbrough to Stokesley and one taking the scenic route from Darlington to Richmond, until the latter was taken over by Dales & District. In fact they still do have a duplicate – there's an X4 running from Middlesbrough to Loftus, and another from Newcastle to Blyth.

Here's a little question for everyone! What route numbers are used by the same operator, but in different city (/town), and run on completly different routes! Let see how many we can get! Stagecoach South have route 1's in most of the Towns they serve (at least Winchester, Basingstoke & Aldershot at the least & I think Worthing & Chichester as well), the Winchester one leading to one of the dafter ones where both Stagecoach & Bluestar have routes 1's heading down the same road but one is a town service and the other goes to Southampton (at one point Southampton had 3 route 7s all going to different places). Centrebus have 3 10's (2 from the same depot but serving different widely separated areas), 2 x 8s (Grantham-Loughborough & Corby-Kettering), 2 x 17s (Luton local & Melton local), 2 x 19s (Luton local & Nottingham-Oakham), 2 x 24s (Melton-Bingham/Bottesford & Grantham-Newark), 2 x 14s (Melton local & Grantham local), 2 x 33s (Market Harborough local & Bourne-Sleaford), 2 x 44s (Market Harborough local & Boston-Sleaford), 2 x 16s (Kettering-Raunds & Melton local) 37 (Sleaford local & Hannington-Northampton) & 34s (St Albans-Dunstable & Kettering-Wellingborough) & that doesn't include any from High Peak who have 1, 14, 60, 61 & 62 which duplicate Centrebus route numbers elsewhere. Grantham has 2 route 1s from different operators, Centrebus with the main town service & Stagecoach with the bus from Lincoln.

I think this has to be the best (or worst?) How about Arriva in Chester? They have 3 routes from Chester Bus Exchange. They are 1 Chester - Wrexham, 1 Chester - Liverpool and 1 and 1A Chester - Blacon (local service)! The are all independent of each other with no interworking! Surely the best argument ever for re-numbering?

Madder and white; probably the best livery in the world.

Believe it's only 2 that serve the Bus Exchange - the Wrexham service serves Station and City Centre only.

The 1 Chester-Wrexham is the Sapphire service isn't it?. Madder and white definitely the best livery in the world.

Different operators but potentially confusing is Nottingham where both NCT and Kinch operate two completely different 9s over Trent Bridge and going back a good few years NCT and Barton had two completely different 14s over the same bridge. With no unified numbering system the logic behind TrentBartons naming of routes becomes a bit more obvious.

I forgot about the Wrexham route not serving the Bus Exchange. 'Madder and white' should tell you where I am from though I have lived in Liverpool for 43 years.
