A new Japanese train is arriving on British shores to replace the much loved InterCity 125. Will people take it to their hearts in the way they did its veteran predecessor? Pendolino probably, perhaps a Javelin, possibly even a Voyager. Not many modern trains are household names in the manner of a Rocket or a Mallard. A new train is arriving from Japan with big shoes to fill. An early prototype Hitachi Class 800 Super Express will be unloaded at Southampton docks as a first step to replacing the familiar InterCity 125. Over the next few years, 122 of these hi-tech trains will be assembled at a new plant in County Durham. All will be electric and almost half will be able to switch between running on overhead wires or - where a line has not been electrified - as diesels. www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-31831603

If the quality of the sets is as good as the Javelin trains S E Trains used on the high speed lines into St Pancras then there should be no problems when they enter passenger service

I remember when the 125's replaced the Deltic's on the ECML, and how appalled i felt as a young trainspotter, that a glorified DMU could possibly replace, arguably, the most charismatic diesel loco ever built. Fast forward nearly 40yrs, and i have to admit the idea of the HST's going forever also upsets me slightly. I've grown to love these iconic train sets and have enjoyed every single second of every journey i've undertaken on one.(Which is a lot), Now i'm (Very much) older, and a (little bit) wiser, and i for one am seriously looking forward to these new jap trains entering service. Wonder if they'll clock up over 40yrs service though?

Those (or some of those) used at present by FGW are meant to be transferring to Scotrail one the Hitachi's enter service, replacing DMU's from Edinburgh - Glasgow and other interurban routes.

Yes the HST`s are to takeover from class 170`s on internal Scottish Inter-City routes. A few wouldn`t go amiss on the Trans-Pennine routes either, they would be ideal crowd shifters. Refurbished of course, they would be far better than a DMU despite their age.

Is that still going ahead, given First have lost the Scotrail franchise?. Yes. The TOCs rarely have any say on the allocation of trains (though unusually FGW do actually own some of theirs outright).
