Train drivers employed by Northern Rail have voted "overwhelmingly" for strike action in a row over pay. Trade union Aslef said its members voted by more than four to one in favour of industrial action, in an 82% turnout. Strikes have been called for November 21 and 27. Operator Northern Rail said it was "disappointed" by the vote for strike action as the firm had made "a very good pay offer of 2.7% in 2014". www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-30040079

Something funny going on there, most places staff would be delighted with 2.7% (I'll be lucky to get anything more than 1% for the next couple of years), and to get 65% of members voting for a strike is exceptional. I wonder what we're not being told...

There must be strings attached to this as most of the population will be lucky to get 1%. It is rather troubling for Northern passengers to have strikes on top of the huge hike in fares over the last few years especially as we have seen no new trains.

Does not look as though they are terribly underpaid! Northern Rail Current Pay: £44,197.00 ATN £41,625.00 FNW
How does that compare with a bus driver at First or Arriva?

Hardly a fair comparison,The safety critical factors and time and level of training required to be a train driver cannot be compared to a bus driver. I'm not belittling what a bus driver does, But when it comes to the all important H&S issues and the ultimate level of responsibility for passenger's, then driving a bus does not even come close to driving a train. Treat yourself to a go on a train driver simulator and maybe then, you may think (as i do) that perhaps they're not terribly overpaid!

Does seem a bit greedy, but unlike most of us who don't work in the public service industry, they can go on strike to try and get more.

Further to the above comment I understand from a Northern driver that the dispute is more about the conditions attached to it than the salary itself
