I'm surprised that this hasn't already been posted, but for the benefit of anyone who hasn't yet heard, Network Rail have authorised for the Penistone Line to be converted to tram-train operation for a two year trial commencing in 2010. Presumably the main reason being that a potential second phase of the scheme could involve the vehicles switching over to Supertram's running track (which surely should definitely become part of a full trialling of a new on-road/off-road system). Hopefully if the trial is successful it could be applied to the busy Harrogate Line, with or without a link to the airport, as has been mooted previously.
