A double-decker bus has been destroyed in a suspected arson attack in a Birmingham street. It is not known how many passengers were on the National Express bus on Stratford Road, Sparkbrook, when the fire started. Nobody was hurt. West Midlands Fire Service said the blaze on the upper deck may have been started deliberately. Police are also investigating the cause of the fire, which started at 14:10 BST. They cannot confirm it was arson www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-27822373

We are entering the summer with the higher temperatures exacerbating existing issues. The big problem is that modern bus engines run much hotter than they did in the past due to the need for extensive emissions reductions either as exhaust after treatment and/or through engine management both of which increase the heat in the engine bay, this can mean that minor leaks or spills that previously wouldn't have had any effect start to produce more obvious issues. A number of manufacturers have struggled with engine overheating & heat related breakdowns (MAN have had big issues over the reliability of their Euro 4 & 5 engines which I believe can be partly traced back to heat issues from the Exhaust Recirculation system they adopted). The new Euro 6 emissions regs take it even further and there are massive issues over the heat generated in the engine bays of engines achieving this level, this has led to much larger cooling packs (often in separate compartments from the actual engine to try and reduce the heat around the engine itself) which is producing weight issues that manufacturers are having to work very hard at to keep the weight down and so avoid a major impact on fuel consumption, it is the leading reason why Volvo switched to the 5-litre engine in their double-decker as it very much helped keep the weight down on a model which was already one of the heavier competitors in the market.

Surprised any operator these days, especially one of the big groups leaves buses unsecured overnight in a bus station. Sadly the dregs of society strike again, not much point in the Police investigating it as the chances of any serious punishment for the offenders is highly unlikely as with any of the other incidents.

Back in the day rural operators used to have out stations which were sometimes nothing more than a parking area in a gravel yard which would be pitch black at night. I expect some operators in deepest Scotland still do this

A number of rural operators will have outstation facilities & whilst a lot will now have migrated into more secure yards of other companies not all are.
