Improvements will be made to First TransPennine Express's fleet with the introduction of 10 new electric Class 350 trains, which will run from Manchester to Scotland at the end of this year, while new depots will open in the future in Liverpool and Preston. There will also be a increase in the capacity on services running between Leeds and Manchester with an extra service running from May 2014, increasing the service from 4 to 5 trains per hour. Journeys times will be reduced by around 5 minutes between Manchester and Leeds. www.tpexpress.co.uk/campaigns/new-trains/

Whilst electrification of the line is welcome, is it going to make things worse for the local stoppers, with the extra TPE train? There is talk of making the Victoria to Huddersfield service a skip stopper service, with the omission of stops on the route, hardly progress. Where as its a boost to have an extra service on the TPE route, what about capacity for another Huddersfield to Leeds stopper and another Manchester/Huddersfield to Wakefield stopper?

With the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the tram route in Edinburgh starting next summer, the timing of electric trains linking central Scotland with Manchester is ideal! I have already committed in principle to a Glasgow weekend during the Games, if not a wider holiday in the area.

Have TPExpress announced when the new trains will be in service? First unit now at Siemens Test facility at Wildenrath, so i'd estimate New Year at the earliest.
