Metro swan is one of the daft ones, although has a very Yorkshire attitude, the image on the Tyke Card would have been a bit stereotypical. Rider Card would have been a popular option, as it would reference to the old days of Yorkshire Rider.
Other suggested names were (from the document): *Wave or wave card – with strap lines such as wave and go or catch a wave, surf and wave *Bronte card (Bus Rail Online Northern Transport Enterprise); Brontesaurus for children *Metro swan – one card – swan off where you want *My Yorkshire Card – MyCard *'Tyke Card' featuring a cartoon Yorkshireman wearing a flat cap and accompanied by a Yorkshire terrier *Metro Touch, Metro Touchpad, Metro Swipe as this uses the „Metro‟ brand name and also suggests how the card is to be used. *Metro Touch Plus could be used when the facility becomes available beyond the West Yorkshire border *Ridings Card *Rider Card *My Yorkshire Card or MY Card

I vote Lobster. It's a sort of take on Oyster, and after all the world is your lobster!

If you get your marketing sorted, going for a distinctive (if somewhat cheesy) name can help get noticed and help sell the product. There are a number of good names being used by operators elsewhere:
Oyster (London) Octopus (Hong Kong) Iff Card (Cardiff Bus - trying to be clever with the name of the city) Walrus (Merseytravel - Beatles reference & marine creature like the pioneers Oyster/Octopus) Carbonara (Centrebus - "a new way of paying for a low carbon era" - all together now, 1, 2, 3 groan!!!) Key (Go-Ahead - your key to local transport)
Anyone want a competition for the most original/cheesiest smartcard brand?

Looking on the M Card site it appears that most of the cards are going to be transferable between different people:
"The card is a transferable card with no photo on it, so you can share it with other family members or friends when you don’t need it, even at weekends."
This is an excellent idea as it allows families to use the card for different purposes. For example one family member commutes during the week and then another family member uses it for leisure on a weekend.

I'll give Metro their dues on this one, they've nailed it pretty well. Looking forward to getting mine, when its time for renewal on my annual Metro Card. I've been critical of Metro in the past but this is real progress and its looks good and is also a welcome leap into modernity.

Following on from the introduction of top-up machines at several bus stations in West Yorkshire, Metro have announced that they'll soon be launching a mobile app for Android to top-up cards.

Why not just have the same generic name for it across the North of England? Will be far simpler for TfN to promote in the future when a the fully integrated smart travel scheme eventually arrives.
