I've been to London a couple of times recently and its a shame to see so many buses now following TFLs requirement for buses to be 100% Red.
So I've been thinking back to the days when buses in London were a little more colorful (I period of time I missed out on, but there's plenty of pictures to look through).
I ask the question what is your favorite London livery? I have given a selection for you to choose from.
For me its London General/Central with the Dark Grey base and Yellow stripe.

Has to be Metroline blue skirt for me.
Why they have to be 100% red I don't know.

What about capital citybus yellow ? I find this topic pointless and boring too lba. London buses are RED and known thus the world over. Yet this topic, which is of no relevance to West Yorkshire, isnt locked. (ref Modifying Stagecoach fleet numbers). sconehead85

I digress... Back to the London liveries, I always liked this: www.flickr.com/photos/britishbuses/2157843203/I think its a really smart looking livery. Am I right in thinking thats London General, or a variant of it? Also, one to add to your list, Grey Green: www.flickr.com/photos/46341292@N05/4484097079/

I liked the Metroline livery with the blue skirt, closely followed by Grey-Green, Sullivan Buses and Blue Triangle. London buses are noted for being red; you often hear the reference: "a red London bus" (usually with double decker in there), but I believe they could still have an area with a relief colour to identify the operator.
TfL have little regard for bus users, or operators for that matter, with their "holier than thou" orders.

I voted 'other' as i was thinking of Kentish Bus, but the Grey Green livery looks like the one i was thinking of.

That was a dedicated livery for the Red Express X43 and was quite expensive to operate, as the buses originally only did 2 peak hour journeys a day - AM towards Central London, PM away from Central London, and spent the rest of the time sat in the depot.

Unrelieved red doesn't look right (an unrelieved any colour rarely works as well as one with something to relieve the colour) and red with a mid-stripe and/or a skirt (like Go-Ahead London or Metroline) looks very professional and fits with a mostly red that TfL appear to want. The London United livery (my favourite personally) was a modernised version of the livery of the original London United before LT was formed.

I too think it is a shame that operators are moving / being moved away from Red Plus livery, I think it helped to add verity whilst still being recognisably London

I always Liked London and Country's Livery, 2 tone Green, with the red band. That and because I remember always going on London and countries Volvo Citybuses on 176 and 85 as a child.

I actually like that all London's buses are becoming uniform. Tourists visiting London expect plain red buses and now they are also carrying the internationally recognised roundel as used on other forms of transport in London - this is far more important than operator logos and liveries, considering that when you are in London the operator is irrelevant to the passenger as all fares etc are identical across the system.
I know from an enthusiasts point of view it may seem dull but buses in London operate in a unique way compared to the rest of the country and "London Buses" is a good solid brand recognisable by all and the uniformity in my opinion helps bring together the routes of the various operators which only exist thanks to competition legislation.

I am happy that the Roundel is back on London buses. I picked up a leaflet of route X26 at Heathrow the other week, and it conspicuously did not mention the operator (Quality Line, now part of RATP). I think TfL are playing down the fact that buses are run by contractors rather than themselves!
