Can everyone remember the days when YR used to operate an exact fare system and you used to have to put your money into a red farebox. It was only in Bradford and Huddersfield for some reason.
Also anyone remember the old Saverstrips?
It's funny how until the mid 90s, the only tickets you could buy on the bus were single fares, no dayriders, returns, weeklys etc, and the only pre-paid tickets available off the bus were Metro's products.

Yes I remember the saverstrip. Called "kerching" used to get 12 journeys for the price of 10 on it. They should do exact fare as they have them in Lothian. U put money into the fare box and sorts it out and issues a ticket automatic which is at the side behind the driver under the staircase. Used to love kerchinging ma strip lol

National Express West Midlands use exact fare boxes too. Throw your money in and there is a ticket machine behind driver underneath the stairs to print your ticket after you have walked on. They are all flat fares too and they are really cheap.

The vidamat ticket machines used in Sheffield in the 1970's photocopied the coins you entered in the yellow machines to produce your ticket - simples........

Youre spot on about Lothian every time ive used them boarding seems so much quicker than down here. Also you can buy tickets from selected bus stops in Edinburgh. The driver just scans them when you board. The reason the exact fare box was unpopular in Huddersfield was because of YR's fares structure ie, journeys costing 48p,53p,58p,63p etc.etc. If they had rounded it up to the nearest 10p and passengers werent fishing around for bits of copper it may have had more success. The death knell for the exact fare box in Hudds came when Blue Bus started running in competition with YR on the A62 Colne Valley corridor. Their proud boast "We give change", Was enough to have YR retaliate by introducing their "Flagship" service on the competing routes, giving change and also the read of a morning paper for the first time.

I thought all districts of YR used fareboxes? Only Bradford and Huddersfield for some reason. I wonder what the newest vehicles were to be fitted with fareboxes, I think it was the L/PWR Volvo Olympians in Bradford

Remember those saverstrips well for expensive reasons, if you plunged them in too fast they took off more than one journey, in fact the entire strip if you couldn't mamage to rip it back out!

IIRC, In the pre WYPTE(Metro) days of Huddersfield Corporation Transport. Several, (If not all) of the dual door fleetlines operating on the 40 Huddersfield-Almondbury route had a form of exact money farebox fitted. It was unique to this route in Hudds and was only fitted in the three batches of dual door fleetlines which HCT had. When these buses were used on other routes, I remember the farebox being covered up. Im pretty sure the last of this type of bus to be delivered new to HCT was GVH 150L .Which received fleet no 4150 on WYPTE's formation.

Farebox started on some routes in Bradford and slowed down buses as staff and passengers got used to it. Then all routes except those running outside the City boundary. Saverstrips could also be used for local train journeys (cancellors on the platform or on the train?)

Nottingham used fare boxes as well, remember filling up one fare box with 1/2p coins just before they got withdrawn (the 1/2p coin that is).

I took a trip to the States in the New Year. You had to feed a dollar bill into the drivers box.

Haha wasn't far off knew it was 12 for the price of something lol 12/10 to start, then 12/9 when Metro said it wasnt working and tried to promote it more. Too many fiddles, machines not working and drivers not following correct procedures when they didnt work. My Saverstrip used to last for months not a week ! Penfold
