The story is obviously a load of rubbish that will never happen.
No mention of how third rail stock will be powered on a diesel line.
Surely electrification of the Harrogate Line to non standard third rail would cost billions of pounds and be a non starter!

I agree with West Yorkshirebus except I do not think it would cost billions but HSE would not allow 3rd rail (It would be 4 really) outside exisitng areas as it would kill thecopper thieves

The trains may be too wide for Bramhope tunnel and they would need train signalling equipment. None of the press so far have shown any interst in facts like these

Apparantly 3rd rail is now banned except for extensions to existing systems, so that kills this idea dead.

The 3rd rail network is also looking at being replaced by overhead wires at somepoint in the future as Network Rail have determined that it has no long-term future.

At least the ex-underground stock will make the Pacers look modern!

At least the ex-underground stock will make the Pacers look modern! The D Stock was built in the early 80s so is slightly older than the Pacers. However, as they were refurbished about 5 years ago they look remarkably modern.

Not related to the electrification, but thought it made sense to post here...
Network Rail are looking to purchase land from a farm just north of Horsforth station to build a new siding, so that three extra peak time trains can operate and turn back without impeding through trains. Local councillors have written to residents (including myself) requesting views on the potential increase in parking.
Hope this is of interest.

Would have thought they could reorganise the existing (redundant ?) sidings tracks to provide the required kick back line without needing to buy any extra land.

The sidings are accessed from the north by a relatively long track alongside the main running lines - looking at it on Google Earth it seems that there is sufficent space to rearrange it so that that track is accessed from the south albeit with wiping out the two sidings that exist. The space issue would be a safe walking route for a driver changing ends which could involve buying some land.

(from today's Post) ....more seats on peak time trains after Northern Rail introduced 50 additional carriages across its network. An extra 309 seats have been created on the Ilkley to Leeds service alone. But the Horsforth scheme to create a new railway siding on green belt land in the Leeds suburb has been met with opposition. Local councillors have warned Network Rail that the proposed site at North Ives Farm, near Scotland Lane, is not a sustainable location. They fear that it will lead to a greater number of cars clogging up streets near the proposed station. Councillor Chris Townsley (Lib Dem, Horsforth) is urging developers to put the new sidings at the proposed Woodside site, which has planning permission to build a new train station as part of a £90m regeneration scheme at Woodside Quarry He said: “What we are suggesting is there have been on-going discussions for years about building a new station at Woodside. “The concept is great but it is using green belt land and we are trying to protect it all the time. “We have had problems for years around Horsforth Station where we have had to introduce restricted parking and this would push cars further down Low Lane.” A spokesman from Network Rail said: “We are due to commence a re-signalling project on the Horsforth to Harrogate line in the new year, which will involve installation of modern signalling technology, improving train performance and reliability for passengers on this busy line. “As part of this scheme, we will be bringing back into use a railway siding in Horsforth, which will facilitate the planned increase in train services between Horsforth and Leeds.”
