It has been announced today that FirstGroup are appointing Giles Fearnley as their new MD for UK Bus with effect from the 1st February 2011. Certainly an interesting development.

Wasn't he with Transdev a few years back before switching to Grand Central?

You could have headed this Worstbus scrapped! I think First have made a lot of good progress over the last 5 years or so, but I think we will see much more in the next 5. We live in interesting times.

I think a livery change might be the first thing in order...

I'll remind you that Dave Alexander was with Transdev before First WY and instead of bringing the Blazefield flair with him, instead managed one of the lowest points in First WY's history, with fares up and services cut like never before.
Whoever in charge is constrained by the wants of the city.

Dave Alexander was constrained by the recession which hit a lot of bus companies hard including good ones. The city sharebuyers lend money to companies at a lower interest rate than banks. All companies need borrowed money. If bus companies were not paying 1.5p in every £1 on income they would be paying 3 or 4p to banks and fares would go up. It takes a few years to change a bus companies culture. Do not expect new liveries next week!

or his hands were tied by the Group MD? Moir Lockhead was clearly on a slippery slope!

Blazefield was not all roses under Fearnley - they very quickly axed routes which made little if any profit (Ripon-York being a prime example when they published a timetable after taking it over from United saying they would improve it and then completed axed it apart from Saturdays)

Now that Giles Fearnley is becoming Manager of First UK buses, he will be the ultimate manager of First bus operations in Bradford and Shipley that were sold from AJS to Yorkshire Rider in 1989, and thus narrowly missed out on becoming part of Blazefield!

You could have added the operations in Otley as well, if most of them hadn't been withdrawn!
