Metro should get some Hybrids for it then the government would have to fund it as 'green travel'

Rumour has it that the Leeds Free City Bus will be withdrawn in April due to budget cuts. That being the case how could Metro justify keeping the other City/Town Free Buses operating

I suspect this is nothing more than the ongoing threat that Metro issued months ago about how the spending cuts may effect bus services.

How many assumptions have you assumed there? about 3? - The free bus is axed - Sainsburys agree to fund their own bus - HJC win the contract.
There is nothing on the Metro website or indeed on the news about the free buses coming off, so where are you all getting this info from?

First City Bus drivers have been informed by letter the fate of the free bus will be decided next week. By all accounts its not looking good!!

Maybe sounding stupid but take a leaf from the North East and the 'QuayLink' brand adapt that into Metro's Free City Bus' could see a profit being made enough to keep the services going. But then again why should the likes of Leeds/Bradford etc.. lose out when Manchester get a hell of investment like they have just seen? It makes you wonder sometime.

So the possibility of a few reasonable secondhand Solos on the market.
What would they be worth?

I emailed Metro about 2 weeks ago, if they had considered the Green Bus Fund & their reply was:
I refer to your email of 27 January 2011 regarding the Free City/Town Buses in West Yorkshire.
I can confirm that Metro has explored the opportunities to purchase Hybrid Buses via the Green Bus Fund.
The Green Bus Fund provides the capital costs to purchase the vehicles and not the revenue costs of operating the service.
As you may be aware the Free Bus services are jointly funded by the District Councils. Metro’s policy is that we would continue to fund the service if the relevant District Council agreed to do so and are now awaiting to be advised of their decision.

Appyling the same rules to the Hybrids being bought by First it would appear that First would be free to operate them on any route where ever they would want.

True, although their "business case" for the buses was probably based specifically around their use on Scott Hall routes and therefore there may be some obligation there. To be honest I think it's a good thing if the buses do get used on other routes for full evaluation purposes, especially as a good proportion of them will be sat doing nothing most of the time.

Manchester's Hybrid Enviro 400's were funded through Green Bus Fund, and within 2 months stagecoach have placed them on most of their double deck routes, during evening and sundays. ive seen at least a couple allocated to random routes, rather than sticking to the indended university routes 42 and 43.
Plus Manchester's Free buses, all have similar fundings, im surprised Leeds free city bus wasn't on the list for green bus fund.

Doesn't Manchester Metroshuttle also receive funding from Spinningfields, NCP Car Parks, Arndale Centre etc?

Assuming the service is saved, from 1st April, the Leeds FreeCityBus will be operated by CT Plus.

They'd probably use an AccessBus before that.

There is zero possibility of a BMC being used as it would be nigh on impossible to negotiate the turn off Clarendon into the LGI. Hard enough on a Solo
