From www.thepress.co.uk"Greener buses are to be trialled in York as part of a drive to improve the city’s air quality. The low-emission vehicles will be tested out on the Park&Ride route linking the city centre with York Designer Outlet over a six-month period from the start of next month, with passengers being asked to let City of York Council know what they think. The trial will see different types of buses, including electric vehicles which can be charged in six hours and hybrid vehicles which use energy generated as they brake to charge a motor. Bus operator First York has teamed up with the council to run the initiative. Coun Steve Galloway, the council’s executive member for city strategy, said: “I am grateful to First York for their work in making these vehicles available for residents to try out. They use technology which we can expect to become commonplace during the next decade and I would very much welcome residents’ comments on the buses. Any suggestions will influence the development of a low carbon and low emission transport system in the city.” The results of the trial will also be fed into Fulford’s Air Quality Action Plan as the buses will pass through the area."

No because that isn't a Green bus... Just a standard Diesel bus

Ah but the press release from First when they introduced it to Bradford said it was greener due to being light weight thus consuming less fuel.

The hybrid vehicle is indeed Volvo B5TL/Wright BK10 MGV which was at Leeds earlier this year and is out on the number 7 route today. The Optare Solo was out on during the Monday evening rush hour, however I didn't get the details of that vehicle.

The B5L demo has certainly been around the block - First Leeds, Bullocks, Transdev Harrogate, and recently with National Express West Midlands. A wild guess that the Solo is probably the 09 plate demo (white with cloud graphics) that was in Stratford earlier this year.
I was looking at the First York website and it mentions the demo is in conjunction with Optare, Volvo and Alexander Dennis, so that probably means the 59 plate E400 that was at Harrogate will turn up. Not sure if Optare have built a hybrid demo yet, just the Manchester ones. One of the Manchester Solo SRs visited Reading a while ago, so maybe they'll borrow one?

I wouldn't call that green, it is Diesel. Unless they have converted it to Hybrid

I wouldn't call that green, it is Diesel. Unless they have converted it to Hybrid Its fuel efficency is far better than anything in its class, that coupled with Optare EcoDrive = greener bus.

Lighter weight than the B7RLE isn't it?

I don't think this has the Eco Drive, because I went on it when it was at Halifax & i'm sure it had a normal dash...

York loaned a Volvo B7TL Plaxton President back in 2001 which had a dual door layout and kids used to sneak on via the 2nd door.

First York should look at maybe hybrid Versa's like Manchester. Good idea, when practically every First York service is run by full sized buses... To be honest, I doubt anything will come from this trial. It's just so First and City of York Council can say they are environmentally friendly and generate positive press releases. Neither party will be willing to buy new vehicles and there won't be any funding coming from anywhere else. The P&R has only just got new kit anyway.

Maybe refurbish some of the current fleet. Re-trim older buses is an idea.
