I don't know what trains you've been on that are only shuffling air about? Quite a number of trains outside of peak times. Many trains on the Pontefract, Hallam, Wakefield and Huddersfield Lines to use some examples carry very few passengers throughout the day and late evenings and this is at considerable expense to the taxpayer (via Metro's subsidy). Whilst on this subject I really do feel Metro have become very narrow-minded of late. It's all about having a go at the big operators and using any opportunity to bang on about quality contracts as if they are the solution to everything. Not really the attitude I would expect from the regional public transport co-ordinators. I'm not defending the operators, especially not First with yet another fares mess on the horizon, but Metro publicly making them their enemy all the time is not going to make bus travel more desirable and increase ridership. End of rant (and slightly off topic too!)

No mention of the FirstYear ticket going up next week, so it's still £620

End of rant (and slightly off topic too!) You could say the same thing about a lot of buses too I expect. It would be interesting to see some actual figures. I must admit to not seeing what point is being made here, perhaps we should pull off all the off-peak trains? I don't see many people suggesting that all non-full buses should be knocked off. In-fighting isn't going to help matters although it's interesting to note that you describe Metro as co-ordinators, co-ordination will not happen whilst the operators hold the power either.

I was backing up another earlier post which stated that Metro seem willing to heavily fund rail services quite happily but when it comes to funding for bus services cuts will be made and battlelines will be drawn with the operators. Perhaps it's an unfair comparison for me to make given how different the two industries are. I'm certainly not advocating the wholesale withdrawal of lightly used rail services however bus tenders are sometimes cut back (eg early morning services) and this is generally accepted so why is this not applicable to rail too. It's a tough balance to strike but sometimes the financial and environmental benefits should be more important than throwing good money after bad for little used services, whether bus or rail.
To bring myself more on topic with the original thread, Metro's heavily subsidised fares are the main reason why bus fares seem comparatively high. Just travel long distance outside the PTE area to see how expensive rail travel really is. If Metro were to suddenly announce a 50% bus fare subsidy (I'm making up figures here) then I'm sure most residents of Leeds would be most delighted with First offering day tickets for under £2.

Coverage on the BBC website about the fare rises, which has, of course, come into effect from today, stating that prices have risen by upto 20% (Leeds Green Zone weekly). Also points out that the FirstDay OffPeak ticket for Leeds, Halifax and Huddersfield now costs £4.30, but no news on Bradford! www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-10832501

Now that we are 12 days into the fare rise wonder how many have switched (that can) to Arriva or Centrebus?
