I have been told that First don't like Wright Bus anymore as they can't lower the weight on the chassis enough to reduce fuel economy so First are going to foreign manufacturers including Temsa of course & one in China (Wonder what this is??)

If First decide to use these buses as standard, York could get some but It wouldn't be for at least another 5 or 10 years.

Wouldn't chassis weight be Volvo's problem, as most Wright's in First fleets are Volvo chassis?

Does this mean the Temsa is permanent then? They never painted the Scania Solar bus when it was at Leeds or Bradford

Well here's a press release from First about the bus, no mention of the fact that the bus will be supplied by Arriva Bus & Coach, Gomersal! They have also photoshopped barbie livery onto the image of the Temsa. www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/latest_news/?id=005521That would be because it is not supplied by Arriva but direct from Temsa. This is part of Firsts drive to reduce weight, & so fuel consumption, on their vehicles but with vehicles that have a higher full-up weight than the lighter weight Enviro 300 or Tempo. They have been talking to many manufacturers, including Temsa & at least 1 Chinese one - I think Wrights are another, to look at lower empty weight buses, the Temsa achieving this through the use of Composite materials. I believe First are looking at a 1:1 ratio of unladen weight to operating payload, so a 9 tonne unladen weight for an 18-tonne max weight bus. The issue with established models is that they are built by truck manufacturers who use parts from the high-volume truck business for their lower volume bus business which may not produce the optimum design for efficient bus design.

The 1:1 ratio cannot be right unless First are expecting a 9 tonne bus to carry a full load of 135 passengers (135 is based on 15 passengers per tonne used by DSA)

The Temsa entered service today, I got on it on the 607 and it was quite nice except the horrible seating arrangement that everyone was companing about & the bell was so annoying "Ding Dong, Ding Dong" every 2 mins. I will my upload photos shortly

The 1:1 ratio cannot be right unless First are expecting a 9 tonne bus to carry a full load of 135 passengers (135 is based on 15 passengers per tonne used by DSA) Just because they are aiming at that ratio of unladen to max weight does not mean they expect to hit max weight - only full touring coaches have a problem with exceeding maximum vehicle weight. The maximum full weight of a 2-axle bus is 18-tonne, First are after a bus where only half of that weight is taken up by an empty vehicle (currently I believe unladen weights are over 11 tonnes for equivilant vehicles). Less vehicle weight means less fuel burned to move an identical load of passengers thus saving money, whilst still having a vehicle designed for carrying heavy loads over a long life - a concern engineers often have over the lighter weight designs from VDL, ADL & Optare (which are plated, I think, for something like 14-tonne max weight) is that they will not last as long on intensive urban operations.

MCW Metrobus's & Routemaster's Unladen Weight is about 9 tonne and look how long they have lasted... You can't even get a full size single decker that weighs that nowadays.
