It look's like tomorrow will be interesting when the DB board approve a takeover bid and it is speculated that David Martin will recommend the offer to investors. www.thisismoney.co.uk/markets/article.html?in_article_id=503125&in_page_id=3&position=moretopstoriesIf the deal does go through with both parties agreeing, it will be interesting to see the 'fall out' of what happens in the industry. Ironic really as a few months back, David Martin said that Arriva would be one of the main players during consolidation of the European transport industry. I wonder if DB will bring some of the concepts it has developed with Chiltern franchise to Arriva Trains Wales and Cross Country? Will they bring their efficiency to the UK which people debate the Germans enjoy. Is it right that such a key part of our infrastructure is given away to foreign hands? The French has muscled in on our water, waste and energy infrastructure. The Germans gaining a large presence on transport and the Hispanics gaining a significant presence in the financial sector in the past couple of years.

Remember this is the board just recommending the deal. The shareholders could always reject the deal!

Reading various articles on the takeover, it looks like Arriva will pretty much be autonomous from the DB brand.

This will be the biggest UK bus takeover since deregulation, beating the previous biggest in 1996, when British Bus was taken over by .... Arriva (albeit then still names Cowie) !
I think Deutsche Bahn's main interest was in franchised operations in continental Europe and Britain (ie rail and London buses). DB will accept deregulated bus services as an inevitable add-on but may make select divestments to recoup part of their expenditure.
Examples I reckon are include Southend/Colchester to Go-Ahead, Guildford/Cranleigh to Stagecoach, Birkenhead to First and Yorkshire to Transdev.

Or other groups from the continent sweep up operations if it were to happen. Remember, DB are likely to lose their market share in Germany when they float onto the German stock market when economic conditions improve and other companies bid for transport contracts.

The European Union has approved the takeover of Arriva today (11th August 2010) with the German operations of Arriva having to be divested to satisfy the EU.
The share takeover is due to be completed by the 27th August and final settlements by the 10th September.
