In all, i think there were either 4 or 5 of these, known as LEV's (Leyland Experimental Vehicles). Most were built in a collaboration between Leyland and British Rail at Derby, but the one in the pic on the first post was actually assembled by Wickham.
There is a book which covers these in more detail as well as all the other 2nd generation DMU's by Colin Marsden called 'The 2nd Generation DMU's'.
