Councillor Keith Wakefield, who is leader of Leeds City Council's opposition Labour group, has criticised bus operators for its decision to stop running buses after 8pm on New Years Eve and not running any services, except the 757, on New Years Day. The Yorkshire Evening Post compares Leeds to Manchester for tonight, where First, Stagecoach and JPT running services in and out of Manchester until 4am. Bluebird and Stagecoach will be running services on New Years Day. www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/West-Yorkshire-Anger-at-early.5944869.jp

I think at least a Sunday service should be operated on all the major routes on New Year Day

I don't understand Metro as they are happy to fund the trains for New Years Day - including the peak extras - yet won't pay for any bus services.

I suggest that if he wants a service on New years Day, he obtains a PSV licence and volunteers to work for one of the Bus Companies. Bus Drivers do like some time off at some point and do have a life outside the company they work for. Trying to get days off throughout the year is difficult so Christmas and New Year are usually the best times to get time off and spend time with the family and friends. Penfold

God can you imagine all the drivers over the limit on new years day. Not that many half the drivers at Bradford are Muslims and it is against their religon to drink

Religion and customs behind, I'm sure all staff will want a well earned few days off. From past experience of late night services being provided in Leeds in the run up to Christmas, they haven't been a huge success.
Manchester doesn't appear to have any New Years day services in operation bar the 43 (Airport-City Centre).
There are some services being run on New Years day though in Merseyside from 10am-5pm on core routes.

They did do late night buses around the start of the last decade (i.e late 90s early 00s) and I believe they were very poorly used.
For NYD, maybe once Boxing Day becomes commercially viable, this will be Metro's next project?
Regarding the comparison with trains, I'm not sure what goes on there as running a normal weekday service is overkill but it has been the same forever. Metro don't provide funding specifically for NYD, it's just that the normal service runs as normal.

In regards to the Late Night Buses in the build up to christmas - they wont be that busy as town on a night hasn't been busy. Students are home for crimbo and many people will have been saving up for the expense of christmas.

Metro don't provide funding specifically for NYD, it's just that the normal service runs as normal. Whilst this is true, Metro are still paying Northern to run a full weekday service after around 8am. If instead they paid for a Sunday service to run, the money saved could go towards funding a limited bus service on key routes across the county. Do Metro not realise many people use buses to connect with trains?
