It got crashed in Halifax Bus Station by a Merc Beaver along with the HJC Service Van, the First service van and a Gemini. The accelerator on the bus apparently got stuck with the driver in the cab.

I've heard today and yesterday that HJC are now going to be withdrawing the 509 route because it is not bringing in enough money and it is the route they don't really need because there is the 681 which goes the same way for most of the route and it will also give them some spare buses which they don't have at the moment on Mon-Fri.

That's a shame. I always use the 509 when going from Bradford to Halifax rather than the 681 or 576.

I am quite surprised to find out that HJC is withdrawing the 509. Observations in Northowram in the morrning peak show buses in both directions carrying a reasonable load of passengers. I admit they do not need a double decker, but 20-30 passengers alight in Bradford and a similar amount in Halifax. Are the loadings on the 34 higher?

Official news from HJC:
- HJC Are not getting Solo's now, they are going to be funded to rent some SLF's probably Dennis Dart's. - Handybus K993 CBO has now been officially withdrawn after the insurance assessor wrote it off.
The following is completely unofficial and cannot be quoted as fact just yet, just what's going round the depot:
- An extra Boothtown service may be starting to give the drivers more work after the Bradford service ends. - The extension of the Rye Lane service to Calderdale Royal Hopsital will probably cease soon. - HJC will be trying to get more and more tender work as this brings a guaranteed income. - The Odsal & Bradford service is probably going to cease in January - not finally decided but is very likely.

I can see the appeal of tendered work, but this often includes evening / Sunday shifts which may not be so appealing

It's a bit late to be thinking about tendered work, haven't Huddersfield Bus just snapped it all up?
A lot of this sounds like depot gossip, drivers worrying about evening work based on tenders that haven't even been applied for, never mind won.

The drivers can't really complain about evening work goes almost with the job doesn't it most operators run till late i.e. 2350 and with 0450 starts. The 509 could carry more passengers if there were newer buses on it! A lot of people comment on the 'old buses' and would rather wait for First buses as they are newer. Shame from our point of view but that is the reality, pehaps if they gave the Metros a proper internal refurb it might do the trick with proper advertising.

HJC may as well accept a takeover bid from a larger operator who can give the necessary investment, they'll have no routes left by the end of 2010 at this rate. I will make sure I'm also on the last 509!!

Who would buy HJC? If the services aren't making sufficient revenue for HJC to withdraw services or make reductions, would another company consider taking them over?

Centrebus would be one of the largish operators that would intend on buying them out; not that it will ever happen in the next 10 years at least, It will be just passed around the family and if not me and my mate will buy the company.

Let's face reality, thanks to ambulance chasers leading to and high insurance prices, revenue from routes like the 509 is quickly sucked up. You need a lot of custom nowadays, a hell of a lot of custom in fact, ironic really that this means more of a risk from an insurance claimer claiming for stupid things like a brused head caused when a bus broke sharply, or even something like a claim for chipped nails caused by a rough surface on a hand rail! Britian is full of greedy wimps who don't know how to just GET ON WITH LIFE!

Before reading the above confirmation of the 509 - I was thinking up ways to broaden its appeal. My idea was to extend the route to the BRI - create a new link for people operate on an hourly frequency, use 2 buses - save 1 bus!

It would be better to run it at 15 minutes before/ after the 681/2.
Been a few minutes either side of the competition isn't really useful.
Hope they have a double decker on the last bus from Bradford on the 25th Jan or some people will miss out.
