As a regular user of the Station I often wonder why my South Yorkshire ( OAP) Pass doesnt work the barriers and why, presumably since other tickets/passes dont work either, so many "gating" assistants are needed.? Perhaps someone knows the answer?

My normal ticket does work either if : you go off the station and then come back on - perfectly legal - then you invavably have to get assistance . There appears to be more help staff than they used to have barrier staff

Only tickets with magnetic stripes work the barriers. Not all tickets have these, most notably the print at home and mobile ticketing and some Metrocards. Anyone holding a valid Metrocard without the stripe can get it changed free of charge at any staffed station within West Yorks. I'd assume, lysander, that your ticket doesn't have the magnetic stripe on as it isn't a West Yorks based ticket?
The gating assistants are good for those travelling with young children/luggage/bikes etc as they can open the wide gates. They are also useful if the machines wont read your ticket for whatever reason (its happened to me a couple of times now and on one occasion it jammed in the slot)
Busman3, what type of ticket do you have as I have a Student Metrocard and the barriers allow me through, even if I've only passed through a couple of minutes previously?

I've found the barriers to be very hit and miss. Quite often my ticket (bought on train, with magnetic stripe) is "not readable". Strangely with a 2 part return ticket, the outward ticket will be fine but the return is rejected, or vice versa. As both tickets are obviously printed at the same time by the same machine this seems rather puzzling!
