East Thames Buses sold
Go-Ahead Group is to buy East Thames Buses (ETB) from Transport for London (TfL) for £5m.
TfL says it expects that the operation of ETB’s contracts by Go-Ahead will save it more than £30m over the next nine years.
The deal includes the staff and assets, and is due to be completed by 5 September. ETB, which has around 460 employees and 113 vehicles, will operate as part of the Go-Ahead London Bus Company, whose London market share will grow to 21.5%.
ETB operates nine routes for TfL, including two school routes. All contracts will be renewed with ETB for five years, from the date of the sale’s completion, together with a two-year option for extension. The annual turnover of the business is around £24 million.

Subsequently, in November, Transdev took over NSL. London bus routes are therefore now operated by just 9 holding companies. These are Go-ahead, Arriva, Macquarie/East London Bus Group, Comfort Delgro/Metroline, First, Transdev, NedRail/Abellio, CT Plus and Epsom Buses/Quality Line.
Could 2010 see CT Plus taken over by First and Epsom Buses by Abellio? CT Plus must have high overheads leasing Ash Grove garage by themselves, and their other operations in Norfolk and Yorkshire are near other First operations. Abellio operate other bus services in Morden and north west Surrey.
We last had London bus operations in just 9 hands between Ausust 1986 (when Metrobus entered the fray) and that December (when Eastern National was privatised). The 9 then were London Buses Ltd, National Bus Company, EnsignBus, Sampsons, London Buslines, Scancoaches, Cityrama, Crystals and Metrobus.
Thus the long-term effect of privatisation of London Buses Ltd subsidiaries has been to reduce rather than enhance competiton for routes.

What is the status of CT Plus? Is is a charity? If so that could prevent or complicate a takeover

HCT Group
HCT Group is the holding company for all our operations. It is a company limited by guarantee (and has therefore no shareholders) which is registered in England and Wales. The company is also a registered charity.
CT Plus C.I.C.
Hackney Community Transport Limited owns all of the share capital of a trading subsidiary called CT Plus. This company runs the majority of our transport and training services and owns our CT Plus trading brand. CT Plus became a Community Interest Company (CIC) in 2007. This is a new form of UK limited company designed specifically for social enterprises. More information about CICs can be found at the website of the regulator.
CT Plus (Yorkshire) C.I.C.
This company, which is a CIC, runs all of our services in Yorkshire. The share capital is owned by CT Plus.

Can either a CIC or company limited by guarantee be taken over?

When GA took over ETB they ran routes 1, 42, 108, 132, 180, 185 and 201. Of these, routes 42, 108, 132, 185 and 201 have been reallocated to Q, NX, BX, Q and AL respectively, with route 1 due to move to NX in November, if not sooner. This will leave just route 180 at BV, with MA having already closed last year. With most buses refurbished or at least repainted into Go-Ahead London livery, the ETB heritage has largely been expunged from the London bus operation.
