I apologise if this is obvious, or has been asked before...but can someone tell me why some First buses have yellow stars next to their destination displays? Not all have them, and those that do are in different positions from one bus to the next - I can't figure it out!
Thanks

I think it has something to do with the presentation of the bus. As soon as vandalism/graffiti is reported its to be removed

I heard it was something to with the quality of the bus, you know you are getting on a good quality bus when it is pulling up.

Well they should take them off the arctics for the brown line, because them buses are certainly not quality.

Thanks for the replies, glad it's not just me then I had considered the "quality" explanation but have seen them on some fairly rough vehicles!

I think it has something to do with the presentation of the bus. As soon as vandalism/graffiti is reported its to be removed Yes, this is basically the reason. All new buses and repainted buses have the gold star applied to the destination glass. Maintenance staff are supposed to check 'star buses' daily for damage, graffiti attacks etc. The theory is that vandals are less likely to attack if their work is quickly removed.

The theory is that vandals are less likely to attack if their work is quickly removed. yeah right lol i should think it encourages more vandals to wreck them since there isnt any already on it! That may well be the perception but in fact the opposite is true. The so called "broken window" theory continues to prove to be true and is believed by many bus companies the world over. This theory says that each etched graffiti tag is a test to see if anyone cares enough to fix it. As soon as the first tag goes up all bets are off that it won't be long before another is applied by a rival. Just look at the proliferation of graffiti on almost all of Bramley's 04 Geminis not long after they were new, which followed the initial testing of the water by the infamous 'Barry' of Seacroft who insisted on etching his tag on the rear upper deck windows of every bus he travelled on. The zero tolerance to etched windows approach has been proved by at least one American Transit Company, although this has come at an astronomical price. Anyway, new Geminis from 37645 have an invisible film bonded to the windows so anybody defacing a window now is actually just scratching the film. How often the film is replaced though remains to be seen

All new buses and repainted buses have the gold star applied to the destination glass. Not all. Only some divisions use the technique but there are many flaws with the system - cost, location of bus in depot, upkeep, disregard to system etc. Most First divisions used it, but only a few still do, because it doesn't work!

The film costs more to replace than the window!!!

But more hassle and hard work, after all First won't be bothered about cost, they get enough profit from the fares anyway!

As do the rest of the 06 Geminis that arrived new to Kirkstall had two stars applied. I take it these buses must have been used as a trial to see if the system would work as Bramley's share of that batch never had them applied therefore appeared to suffer more vandalism.
