I'm not sure how long it been in their fleet, however Mercedes-Benz O814/Alexander 2704 (R158 UAL) in fleet livery was operating the 181 (York - Malton) this morning.

They've got a new (or variation) on their livery now, as seen on this bus www.flickr.com/photos/emdjt42/3468024455/ - seen it on a coach aswell. It bemuses me how much money must be wasted on competition between York and Easingwold, either have Stephensons shuttle buses Easingwold-Helmsley (interworking with Helmsley-Maltons if necessary) or have 1 company, preferably Reliance, run everything north of York. Then recast the routes and times.

What advantage would that do? Reliance are an independant and offer a good service. Things should stay as they are!

Transdev should at least try expand a bit more in York and maybe compete against routes such as the 1 and 4.

Transdev York should buy maybe Reliance. 5 years ago the 30 & 40 were alternate hours for most of the day (IIRC - I read something that suggested the 40 was 90mins in 2004 but it doesn't sound right). No Sunday service, only the tendered 31 via Linton. Then the 40 was made hourly, two-hourly on Sunday between the 31s thanks to kickstart funding. Now Reliance run twice hourly with the new two-hourly 30X supplementing the 30, hourly alternate 30/40 on Sundays. Transdev improved their new X54 to hourly, cut it back again to 90mins within a few months and now have the twin problems of having lost York contracts to Pullman and a well-meaning HCT creaming revenue off the X54. Snatching contracts off Stephensons maybe, but I don't think buying Reliance is high on their list of priorities!

I think we all know the TLT and Veolia purchase was a move in finding a suitable new site for the Coastliner operations. Afterall, the two businesses combined that form Transdev York isn't really a lucrative operation for a large group with Sightseeing and tendered services. Also to note, Transdev usually submit high tender bids so when the 14, 24/26 and 20/20A come up for retender, it could be unlikely they will retain them.
Anyway back to the subject in hand, I'm not really a fan of the new livery Stephenson's have, much prefer the old livery.

My bet is Transdev York will just be sold off to Pullman maybe in the future.

If there is enough demand to support the competition then why not let it happen. Stephensons/Reliance/John Smith's services are all commercial arent they? Yes but there are 3 of them (not counting Hodgsons' evening/Sunday services) - in a city the dominant operator would probably be making more than enough to cover for small-scale competition, but in the country the dominant operator could have issues of passing/selling the company on and potentially dwindling profits whilst trying to protect the customer base. There could be issues of network stability if Reliance were to close, not that I have any evidence to suggest they will. Replaced with Plaxton Primos on tendered services in 2007.

Why are those issues any different in the country compared to more urban routes?

Sorry, you're right, I'm over-generalising (I'm thinking small-scale as in First vs Powells in Sheffield or Geldards in Leeds). Incidentally this is a wonderful document IMO: www.citizensadvice.org.uk/pdf_ruraltransportfutures.pdf

Where do Reliance get the money to get all these modern Volvo's ? They'll be leased although the 51? Volvo wasn't. Tenders and investments from the owner/ director are the other form of income
