The only people who make a profit on the east coast is the government, we had this with GNER and now NXEC. The problem is the government greed when it comes to letting the franchise, and the crippling payments they demand. This is one of the only routes that makes a profit in this country so that must tell you something!

I think National Express were kidding themselves as to the amount of money they will pay for the franchise.

My view is that if NX were willing to pay a stupid amount for the franchise, then why would the government turn it down?
If the government had specified the cost and no TOC had bid, then they would have had no choice but to lower their expectations, but if someone's offering you a silly amount of cash you'd bite their hand off!
NX got themselves in to this mess and now they've come unstuck.
