A Connexions double decker caught fire in Otley this afternoon - presumably on the X52 heading to Ilkley as it was at the junction of Bondgate and Crossgate (next to the Rose & Crown pub). Sorry, no numbers as I'd just come back from a 5-mile walk and wanted to put my feet up rather than go out again!

The irony of it all - as wasn’t Euro 6 vehicles being required used as the excuse to withdraw the 38.

Is there a connexion (ahem) between them taking on the 64 (PVR of 4) and at the same time handing in the keys to a number of other routes? And yet the routes they are cancelling – RS1/2/3, 38, 492/493, 780 – mostly look to be using Solos or ancient Scanias, which would come across as very much the poor relation on the 64. Have they acquired additional vehicles for that, or are the existing Solos being shuffled round and downgrading other routes to release better vehicles for the 64?

I’m sure I saw a comment from an HCT employee that Scania L94s YN05GXA-E are likely to be the normal allocation on the 64.

I don't really think much of the Connexions Buses, much rather a Transdev bus.

I don't really think much of the Connexions Buses, much rather a Transdev bus. I would rather drive a Jaguar than a Nissan. But what we want isn't always what's on offer. A lot of Connexions' routes are routes that other operators didn't want to run. Transdev withdrew their buses to York years ago. They weren't going to run to St James' Retail Park until Connexions started doing so. They cut the 6 to run every 40 minutes until Transdev gave them competition. Transdev couldn't compete with them on the Harrogate—Otley route and withdrew their service. First York pulled the 13 and Connexions took it on commercially. When NYCC pulled the funding for minor routes around Harrogate, Connexions tried to run them commercially when Transdev wouldn't. Yes, we all want shiny new buses with luxury seating and the like, but buses like that are only viable on busy routes. If Connexions and other cheaper operators didn't run any services, you wouldn't get a high quality Transdev bus – in most cases the best you could hope for these days is an NYCC minibus running in between school journeys.

That general ‘rule’ of smaller, lower cost operators running non-core services on very thin margins, is one that is replicated across many parts of the country. In fact, it isn’t that dissimilar to how many industries develop. However, I’ve always thought that Connexions make too many important business decisions based on the owners apparent grudge against his former employers, rather than for sound economic business reasons, and that often leads to trouble.

Transdev withdrew their buses to York years ago . Assuming you are referring to the service from Wetherby and was that not a contracted service. They weren't going to run to St James' Retail Park until Connexions started doing so. A strange one that as loadings from the retail park seem to very low - Connexions could have made a number of useful links en route but instead duplicate Transdevs route through Starbeck, suspect their is more defending their market than any significant custom for the retail park in Transdevs actions. They cut the 6 to run every 40 minutes until Transdev gave them competition. Think you mean Connexions gave them competition. That was painfully slow in coming about - originally they were going to extend some X1s. Transdevs response was not immediate - it took Alex Hornbys arrival to see the local service rostas reshuffled to enable a 30 minute frequency on the 6 but that does not excuse Connexions barking timetabling to the same departure times from Harrogate bus station. Transdev couldn't compete with them on the Harrogate—Otley route and withdrew their service. Someone odd that given Transdevs fare via a Keighley day ticket was cheaper. When NYCC pulled the funding for minor routes around Harrogate, Connexions tried to run them commercially when Transdev wouldn't. Connexions were the incumbent operator of the 104/X4 having won the last NYCC tender.

Transdev couldn't compete with them on the Harrogate—Otley route and withdrew their service. Someone odd that given Transdevs fare via a Keighley day ticket was cheaper. Tell me about it! The extension of the(7)62 was great while it lasted and I used it for a while to get from Otley to Leeds via Pannal when First Leeds went on strike a couple of years ago. It was badly served at Otley bus station as there wasn't really a suitable bay for it so you would often see it setting down and picking up at the traffic island, as at the time First were running the 965 with double deckers which blocked the stand where it should have gone. Connexions also timed their X52 to run about 10 minutes earlier and creamed off all the concessionary travel. If Transdev had used some imagination, they could have extended the service that ran half an hour later between Keighley and Ilkley instead and given a 20/40 minute split on the route, which would improve overall loadings between Otley and Harrogate. It's certainly noticeable that since the 62 and X52 started running between Otley and Ilkley, there seem to be more people using the bus overall because with at least 4 buses an hour, the frequency is reasonable.

Connexions only retimed the X52 in front of Transdev due to Transdev choosing to extend the 1 journey an hour that would have run 5 minutes ahead of Connexions.
Had they extended the other journey per hour, it would have provided a more even frequency, but Transdev's chose not to.

Had they extended the other journey per hour, it would have provided a more even frequency, but Transdev's chose not to. However, if they'd extended the other one it would have run at a similar time to the 747, whilst the X52 only ran every 2 hours when Transdev registered the Harrogate extension. Of course, since being extended to the Airport they've swapped which journeys extend beyond Ilkley.

And the side effect was Connexions response in axing the X53, together with Yorkshire Tiger rerouting the Bradford-Airport-Harrogate via Greengates, withdrawing any Guiseley-Harrogate link.

How many digs at Transdev can you spot in that article, at least three or four. It really is unnecessary

We are sorry to announce that our fares are having to increase from 4th February.
Our School services will not increase this academic year, however, nor will the 64 (as these fares are set by First).
Cost increases and a pay rise for our hard working and loyal staff have led to this – as a family owned company we have to balance our books as we don’t have parent companies that can help out when we have a shortfall.
We have kept the increases to a minimum and will still remain the best value in Harrogate, as we realise that some customers prefer good decent old fashioned value to add-ons which add cost.
Going Green and White helps support local business – there are very few smaller independent Bus companies left in this country as the large Plcs and foreign owned multinationals squeeze them out.
We work in partnership with those who appreciate how we can help them -as shown by the 64 service in Leeds – this has helped keep a service running that may have otherwise had to cease and kept customers able to use the great value tickets that First offer throughout West Yorkshire.
Thank you for your ongoing support and thank you for being our customers.

It really is unnecessary There's no digs at Transdev at all be it direct or otherwise There's comments about not not having a parent company, "Foreign owned multinationals" which seems to be a favourite phrase when referring to Transdev. "We work in partnership with those who appreciate how we can help them" - you don't think that's a reference to Transdev (though neither seem willing so speak to the other)? What does seem to be missing is any actual details about the fare changes.

What does seem to be missing is any actual details about the fare changes. both of them two quotes can also be aimed at Arriva though. Transdev & HCT could do with teaming up to promote each other's Harrogate services that run on the same corridors and they can both do the same York side with First, York Pullman & Reliance and say offer an interservice saver scheme or fares. It's worked for Transdev as York side they show and promote Arriva's 42 weekend timetables as well as showing the ex-Stephensons routes Reliance have taken on. It's what's needed if they want to get people to stop using their cars amd onto buses. HCT do well for themseleves are smartly turned out as are the drivers. When i've been in Leeds recently i've noticed the 64 always has a decent footfall and the drivers go out of their way to help passengers on and off the bus. Now in regards to Arriva First or Transdev that can be a rarity.
