It's because no one has probably seen them before, but as more and more buses start to get them it will just look normal and no one will pay much attention to them, me personally I think they look good.

An idea that's been around for years in the USA! Makes people notice the ad for the first few weeks, then once people get used to seeing them, they won't look twice at the ad so a bit of a waste of money unless first can come up with some other fresh approach such as neon lighted ads, 3d ads etc.

Better than putting the adverts over the windows!

It would be so easier to put the ad on a double decker

First are probably just trying to make more money out of it.

Only 69360/1 have had these new supersides retrofitted to them. It is a good idea compared to having adverts below the windows on single deckers and now with legislation requiring new build SDs to have the emergency exit door on the offside to be in the centre of bus results in a loss of advertising space.
Also, if First makes more revenue through an increase in advertising on single deckers. It means they won't need to increase fares.
York Castle Museum has been impressed by the adverts and are looking to extend their contract.

They stand out like a sore thumb? That's the general idea!
I personally don't understand why people think they are ugly, they are the exact same things you find on a DD!
And for First just trying to make more money out of it, why not? At least they won't be ruining your view outside of the bus windows, or wrecking the paintwork and panels and making the bus look scruffy.

I hope the drivers are aware of the increased height or they might be in for some re-boding after going through any low height arched bridge.
Not sure if there are any of these in the York Area
