Is there any bus service between Manchester and Sheffield?
Am intrigued to know the route and what gets allocated to it. I would imagine if there is it wont serve the villages that have a direct train service between the two.

There's no service that I'm aware of, although I would imagine that National Express will operate the route. There is a half-hourly express rail service though.

Don't think there has been a bus service between Manchester and Sheffield. Closest thing to it was the old summer Sunday 373 service from Manchester to Castleton in the Peak District, via Hyde and Glossop (still runs Glossop-Castleton on summer Sundays).
Snake Pass and Woodhead Pass do tend to get shut when the weather gets bad, more so than other Pennine roads, so that would make it impractical for a bus service. Plus with the route being over 50km, it would probably be coaches used on the route, like used on the TransPeak and X61 services in Manchester.
As mentioned, there's a couple of NE coach journeys plus Transpennine/East Midlands trains direct and Northern Rail via New Mills. You can do Manchester to Sheffield on the bus by catching Trent Barton's TransPeak (or 199 from Stockport) service to Buxton and then First South Yorkshire's 218 service to Sheffield, although that'll take you about 3 to 3 1/2 hours!

I remember at least 2 different services.
There was a regular 2 hour service 48 later X48 between Sheffield and Manchester. I think this was was originally jointly operated between Sheffield Transport/SYPTE and North Western.
Route took it from Sheffield via Hillsborough, Deepcar, Stocksdridge, Midhopestone, Flouch Inn and over Woodhead. I don't know the route into Manchester. Not sure when the route finally stopped but it down to just two trips per day not too sure the times of the morning service I think it left Sheffield 9:30. By the early-mid 1980's the evening one left Sheffield at 17:30 and towards the end was operated by the Leyland Leopard Alexander White Rose Motorway coaches ex fleet Nos 55-60 FWJ355-60J and 61-64 WWB 301-4G from East Bank road depot
Richardsons then ran the X49 which was Sheffield - Manchester Airport which took the same route from Sheffield to the Flouch Inn
The Second Route was the 39. This was operated by Sheffield Transport and went over Snake pass and was less frequent. I think this last ran in the 1970's. I'm pretty sure that this was operated by Sheffield Transport sole AEC Roe Dalesman 900, 9000 WB. Again operated out of East Bank road.
A slight aside but Yorkshire Traction operated between Barnsley and Manchester over Woodhead. Don't have any more details except they operated were still operating theirs when the Sheffield ones stopped

The Barnsley - Manchester service was numbered 20 and operated by one of their dual purpose buses (not sure of make) with additional summer only routes along the same route to Southport. Anyone know where the 19 ran in the Holmfirth area? Did it run to Greenhead?

The X48 Sheffield - Manchester was joint between Ribble and SYPTE. Looking at the 1974 timetable it would appear that Ribble covered all the Monday to Saturday working with departures @ 7:45, 16:30 and 18:30 from Manchester with departures two hours later from Sheffield. Sundays were different with departures @ 9:45, 18:30 and 20:30 from Sheffield. The Manchester departures @ 11:45, 18:30 and 20:30 Running time was 1hr 50mins.
Into the early 1980's Not 100% sure but it is possible that Ribble might have operated the morning trip Manchester - Sheffield - Manchester. SYPTE, operated the 17:30 ex Sheffield and return I occasionally caught it home. It was never busy and I am pretty sure it came off the X32 into Sheffield circa 17:15.
The Yorkshire Traction Barnsley Manchester Service was limited stop numbered X19 in the early 1970's. The route was Barnsley, Silkstone, Oxspring, Penistone, Soverign Inn Junction A629/A636, New Mill, Holmfirth, Greenfield, Mossley, Stalybridge, Ashton under Lyne, Manchester. Journey time 1hr 45mins. Daily departures @ 8:00, 12:00 & 17:00 from Barnsley with the return leaving Manchester 2 hours later. There were additional trips leaving Barnsley at 10:00 and 15:00 on Saturdays. Fridays and Sundays also had extra departures @ 18:00 and 19:00. The latter also operated on Saturdays.

The above has provided me with some clues to the 19 service. I bet it ran on a stopping basis from Barnsley along the x19 route to Manchester via Greenfield (not Greenhead as I typed above).

The Manchester Sheffield X48 was at the Sheffield end the same route as the old 48. At that time a number of operators were trying to improve the running times of the longer services with the use of larger more powerful buses and stopping restrictions. In those days service changes were fewer and further between than today plus new routes were notoriously difficult to introduce with the incumbent operators objecting to the new service reducing their existing passengers.
Who's for bringing back Notices and Proceedings?
I hope thats the correct title which was being used when service changes were being proposed

The sheffield - manchester service was the 48 when it was joint operatied the X appeared in PTE days, the service was acualy a Sheffield Joint Omnibus Committee route, indeed there were two sheffield - manchester roures one was via snake (49 ?) the other via woodhead (48).
The X48 ended at the day before D Reg in 1986.
The only service now is (as others have said) is national express
Richardsons ran a sheffield - manchester airport service which was at one time extended to manchester city centre this no longer runs

If I remember correctly the 39 only used to run through to Manchester in the summer months, and to the Snake Inn from Sheffield in the winter months.
