Train operator Grand Central has announced that it will continue to suspend services throughout June as bosses wait for further advice from the Government. The problem that Grand Central and Hull Trains face is that they are OOAs (open access operators) who operate a purely commercial service, and they don't count as a TOC (train-operating company) that operates a franchise. The franchised TOCs run contracted services, many of them receiving a subsidy (although there are some that turn a profit), and the government has to ensure that those services are maintained long-term, notwithstanding any short-term reductions as we work through the pandemic. It's very likely that the government will prop up any TOCs that are struggling financially, but the alternative is that they can take those franchises back into public ownership (as has happened on Northern and East Coast a couple of times already) or re-let the franchises on new terms. But they are under no such obligation with the OOA services, and so there is a real risk that those routes could be lost if the operators go under. As someone who uses Hull Trains semi-regularly, that would be a great shame!

It would incidentally mean that Grand Central had refurbished class 180s and Hull Trains obtained new stock for only short-term use through no fault of their own.

Grand Central has announced a ‘measured’ return to service following a four-month period of hibernation during the COVID-19 lockdown. The Yorkshire-based company is inviting passengers to book for its West Riding and North East routes that commence 26 July. Grand Central thanked customers for their support whilst services have been suspended and invited passengers to once again “put their faith” in the company. Timetables and more information www.grandcentralrail.com/coronavirus-latest-travel-information-grand-central Two trips daily. Inevitable given that, as Open Access Operators, they receive no financial support from Government like franchise operators do.

are there cuts back to 'key workers services' again? why run loads of empty trains during lockdown? Its been decided at a national level. It depends on the requirements for the amount of train crew having to go back to shielding as to the level of cutback

are there cuts back to 'key workers services' again? why run loads of empty trains during lockdown? * EMT have an amended timetable from 18 January. Monday to Friday, 1834 London St Pancras to Leeds does not run between Sheffield and Leeds. Saturdays there's no EMT service to or from Leeds or York. * NORTHERN have a reduced timetable from 18 January (see NORTHERN thread). * TPE are to introduce a revised timetable from 8 February (see TRANSPENNINE thread).
