My main interest in buses is the routes and timetables, and one thing I have found is historical data about bus routes often gets lost in the mists of time. Just think abouthow many sketchy, incomplete lists of routes there are on this forum, drawn from people's distant memories. So, I've gone back to an original source, a 40-year-old Metro bus timetables book from July 1979, to create a spreadsheet of all 180 bus services operating in the Bradford district at the time. I've included service numbers, routes (main places served), frequencies, and operators. Please have a read through. All feedback welcome. If something can be clearer, you're unsure of the accuracy of something, or you have anything else to add, please let me know. Nostalgic memories of these routes are also welcome below! Feel free to share this read-only spreadsheet link elsewhere if you think anyone else might be interested. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18NzPiBKKGkHeQkOPUXAErzUhxP7RRtjXm7olHQXx3H4/edit?usp=sharing

Hi 'martinsfp'- thanks very much for publishing your list of Bradford routes 40 years ago. This contains a wealth of information and should be of interest to many members young and old on the forum.

Can just about remember the Hollingwood Lane buses terminating on Welbeck Drive. I would 5-6 years old back then

Were buses still crewed in 1979? In conductor days, buses reversed at the terminus at Holly Park Drive/Welbeck Drive, but they may have had to alter this arrangement for opo before the route was altered to miss out Holly Park Drive (there's another thread somewhere on this forum about termini where buses reversed).

Simple answer is yes they were crew in Bradford in 1979. IIRC Bradford district was 93% crew until well in to the 80's. By comparison, Leeds had very little crew by 1979, Halifax had approximately 60%, and Huddersfield had slightly less than that.

Yes, my dad became a conductor in Bradford in 1979 and was shifted over to driving in about 86/87.

What is interesting is that someone somewhere at First WY must have good historical knowledge as when they revised the Wyke service a couple of years ago, they used the 686 number, even though it was last used 30 years ago.

Very good to see.
One point I've noticed that is wrong, and certainly NOT the fault of the author, and can understand why it's wrong, is the 259, is put as operated by both Yorkshire and Yorkshire Traction, which the service was only ever operated by Yorkshire, (travelled from Gomersal to Dudley Hill to visit Grandparents in 70's, so used both 259 & 260) and looking in my Bradford district October 1978 book shows the same exact info Yorkshire/Yorkshire Traction as operating 259, due to the National Bus logo as the code.
Whereas, when looking in Kirklees District October 1978, 259 has National Bus logo, and 260 has + to denote operated by Yorkshire and Yorkshire Traction.
