The 144's were due to have been withdrawn by now and the 142's should have started to be withdrawn, however, the overrun by Network Rail on electrification of the Blackpool and Bolton lines (among other things) has led to the introduction of electric trains onto routes previously diesel operated routes being delayed, meaning diesel trains have continued to be needed and with no replacement diesel units, the pacers have had to continue.
The Bolton line is finally complete and 319's have begun to see services up that way, which should help with the pacer withdrawls, while another visible sign of change is the use of 158's between Carlisle and Newcastle which started this week.

Thanks Tim, Am i right in thinking some class 144's have already transferred to Wales?. Not to my knowledge, no, but if that is the plan then with the additional 156, 158 and 170 units transferred down from Scotrail, 319's beginning to take over previously diesel operated services and the 769 Flex bi-mode units due in service in the next few months plus driver training on the brand new CAF Class 195 and 331 units hopefully starting soon, then the 142's and 144's will soon be at the end of the line here, leaving the Rolling Stock owners to decide what happens. Shame for the 144's as they aren't bad units, but nothing lasts forever.

It has been speculated that some of the 144s will be moved to Wales to cover for units there which need appropriate work to comply with 2020 regulations. It hasn't happened yet and in fact Neville Hill has started to withdraw 153s for transfer to Scotrail and conversion to luggage/bicycle units. In any event the 3-car 144s are required for the Penistone line until such time as the platforms can be lengthened to take 3-car 150s which are (regrettably) due to replace them.

The great western 153s were only here temporarily as they were subleased to Northern until the rest of the Scotrail 156/158/170s arrived, now their here they will go upto Scotrail to be converted to bicycle carriages

I believe at least one 144 unit (2-car) is now officially a TFW train, but has been sub-leased back to Northern for the time being. Don't know the fleet no though.
