This operator recently took over a Metro contract and on Saturday 21st was using a 16 plate Ford Transit suitably branded as the Marsden Link so it would appear that it is the dedicated vehicle for the 6 day a week contract. I saw it dropping off passengers at Morrisons in Meltham. Apart from a laminated route number card in the windscreen there is no destination display and the driver has to leave his seat to open the sliding side door. The other two routes to change hands in this area recent (911 and 933) are operated using low floor buses, "proper" destination displays and power doors. Does anyone know why S Pennine CT can use such a vehicle when other operators are required to use suitably equipped vehicles.

Probably keeps the tender price down...

That was my initial thought but the two elderly ladies who got off the vehicle at Morrisons struggled to get down the steps to the ground

A similar thing has happened in the north east where some peak times works services used to be run by Go North East using a double deck inter working with schools. They are now run by Gateshead Central Taxis using a transit style minibus inter working with Taxibus services.
Both PTEs presumably go with the lowest bidder with no specified vehicle size or type.

Most of the local bus service in Zakopane (Poland) is run by a number of private operators using similar vehicles (the passenger opening the door)

Doesn't DDA apply to van based minibuses???

Doesn't DDA apply to van based minibuses??? it does to a degree. Take Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust as an example, they've upgrade their staff shuttle minibuses to the more newer ford transit as these have better wheelchair access and the more up to date ramps/tail-lifts that can load wheelchair passengers on more comfortably.

Doesn't DDA apply to van based minibuses??? No, DDA (or more accurately PSVAR as it should be referred to now) does not cover vehicles with less than 22 seats.

So the elderly in the community have to suffer getting in and out of a bus because a vehicle with less than 22 seats does not have to be DDA( or PSVAR) compliant. Anything to save a few pounds on a contract. Brilliant.

Basically yes. They could specify a certain type of vehicle, but it'd push the tender price up, and hence they'd get less from their overall budget.

Travelled on the 937 afternoon service yesterday. The vehicle is not fitted with a ticket machine as they are "still waiting for it to be delivered". The use of my OAP card was written down in a notebook. How do they claim for concerrionary fares(on trust)

In the yard at Honley this morning was a Mercedes low floor(no step) minibus complete with fleet names etc. Rather unusually for this operator it would appear that the vehicle is secondhand. "BG53VUW" with route number 309(Honley-Holmfirth) displayed in the window.

Enviro E200(YY67HBL) on hire from Manchester Community Transport to operate the 933 Meltham Circular. It will be interesting to see if this vehicle is being used whilst SPCT are sourcing a permanent vehicle.

The E200 is, apparently, a short term hire until they find a suitable vehicle. According to the driver yesterday(Thursday) the vehicle obtained to work the service has not turned out to very reliable.

The Manchester community transport e200 appears to have been replaced by another e200 from the same source.

It is being reported on a Facebook site that the E200 is on short term loan from Manchester Community Transport. Apparently depending on tender results due to be announced in the Spring a decision will be taken to source further E200's.
