Unless anyone knows any different, the first two trains away for repainting into Arriva Northern's new livery are 150 275 and 158 752.

Arriva made a mess of Northern last time they ran it, now regarded as bottom of the pile in the major bus groups, even First seem to have overtaken them in the quality stakes. My journey on the 13.06 Leeds to Nottingham Express last Friday operated by a clapped out 150 did little to inspire. Let`s hope they do a better job this time.

Arriva INHERITED a mess when they took over the franchise.
MTL (Northern Spirit) had offered drivers redundancy, believing they could replace them with new drivers on lower wages, but only after a number took the offer did they realise it takes 12 months to train a driver, leaving them with significant train crew shortages.

Hardly a new situation 150s being used on Leeds - Nottingham, it was something Northern Rail did as well as York - Blackpools when 158s were unavailable.

"Arriva INHERITED a mess when they took over the franchise." Yes! And during their franchise they ghad to endure the Great Heck flood which cut the ECML, the rebuilding of Leeds station, and the Hatfield disater, all of which had huge impacts on every part of the rail network. They got the flack for all this and lost the frnachise after sorting it out! re the earlier post - Arriva buses are on the up. There 's a revolution in service quality improvement in many ports of the UK, but they do need to up their marketing

I agree with the marketing of Arriva should be better. As for Northern Rail I sincerely hope we get the investment promised, we deserve it in the North.

Must endorse the view that Arriva inherited a mess of a franchise and had to take a lot of flak while sorting it out, which eventually they did. Having done so, they were rewarded, as was so often the case around that time, by having the franchise split up and being awarded neither part of the result. If you had a 150 on a Nottingham train this is more than likely to have been filling in for a failure. Would you have preferred it not to turn up at all? As to Yorkshire Tiger, the smart well-run outfit of a year ago was set up by Arriva - you can't have it both ways. Before Tiger it was every bit as much a mess as it is now. Basically it's a marginal operation which will always struggle for investment.

One slight problem is that as soon as the franchise was taken over an early morning Doncaster to Leeds train is cancelled nearly every day. It's become something of a running joke on the local radio stations

The timing is bad when you consider Kirkstall Forge opens tomorrow, broken down electric units will add to the pressure. I expect the ongoing bus strikes plus water main works on the A65 will drive many people to park up at Kirkstall Forge and try to board already over crowded trains. I think Leeds to Bradford trains should stop there.

I think Leeds to Bradford trains should stop there. The opening of Kirkstall Forge won't make much difference - the timings were altered last year to account for the stops there. If you want Bradford to Leeds trains to stop there, you'll have to make significant changes to many services at Leeds as they will then arrive later, missing their current slot. I'm not saying they shouldn't - just that it's not a quick fix.

I think many bus users on the A65 beyond Kirkstall Abbey will transfer to rail tomorrow and may stay with the trains to get to work.

I think they won't have more services per hour until the whole site immediately around Kristal forge is built, so all the new businesses and all the new homes that are planned.

Is that a particular busy time?
Looks a little early to be the very peak of busyness.
Odd that it doesn't seem to do anything else. Does it go back to Bradford at some point to be the 1021 to London?

There are some fare changes from yesterday (4 September). Northern are reintroducing the CDR (offpeak day return) on certain routes outside the PTE areas eg Bradford to Blackpool, at about 15% off the SDR (anytime day return) price.
