What are they like to run then because I have spoke to many people that run Optares & they aren't happy with them. Are you ordering them all with the little Merc engines or the far more superior 6 cylinder Cummins?

They must be happy with the ones they already have. Performance / reliability will also be dependent on terrain / hours of operation & loadings etc. The BL ones won't be getting hammered.

Until last Saturday when I was a tour maker at South emsall I'd never heard of this company. One thing I did notice was on the Wakefield service they had a massive layover period and I'd estimate that there was a bl travel bus parked on a bus stand for over 45 min's each hour. Is this normal as seems like a waste of resources to have buses sat there for up to 25 mins at a time

Is this normal as seems like a waste of resources to have buses sat there for up to 25 mins at a time It's not unknown for this to happen. If an operator schedules as one-man to one-bus, which is common for some independents and some councils will design tenders with in-built breaks which makes them more cost effective for smaller operators, in which case the bus will be parked up whilst the driver is having his break. Bigger operators don't tend to as it would require too many extra buses and creates inflexibility in schedules but for smaller operators who need a higher spare ratio anyway due to the smaller fleet it can fee more personal and the drivers take better care of their own bus. It also occurs where a company simply has no other work in an area that fits in to the scheduled gap so you schedule a gap there, I have had a contract that ran hourly and took 1hr 10 mins to do the round trip so it would park up for about 40-mins in every 2-hours.

The Excel's engine has been sounding as though it was on it's way out recently so not surprised.
