Have Longstaff's ceased trading?
I notice on the latest PSV Circle news that the 2 B7RLE's have gone to Lyles, Batley. Are they now running the 205?

longstaffs now have a 02 plate optare excel, it passed me at shaw cross fresh from the painters and later found its self to do the st johns run. The livery and route branding is the same as the volvos.

It's good for the people on the Mirfield-Dewsbury route, That Lyle's have kept the Longstaff name and livery. Maybe it was a condition of the sale that they did so. However it is surprising to see the new Excell in Longstaff's livery. I would have thought it would have been in standard Lyle's colours.

I saw the Optare Excel on Saturday (24th Nov) on the service 205. Looked quite smart from the outside but I don’t know what the internal state of this vehicle is like.
One thing that has confused me about this service is why Longstaff /Lyles do not re-time the service. Currently to Dewsbury the service runs 13 minutes behind the 202 along the same route for most of the morning. During the more important (busy) mid afternoon/evening times the 202 changes to run just 5 minutes in front of the 205. From Dewsbury the service runs a few minutes behind the 202 for most of the day.
Surely the service would become more viable if it ran at 15 minutes between the 202 for the majority of the day? This would provide a better service for the passengers on the route and mean that the service isn’t shadowing Arriva for most of the day. Other improvements I would like to see are:
Run the service in a loop round Dewsbury to call at the rail station and markets. There is very little to attract people to Dewsbury nowadays – many people only use the town for the markets or as a calling point for a connecting train. The service could then be advertised as Dewsbury for onward connections to Leeds, Huddersfield etc. if it can be timed to fit in with a train service. Similarly, the old dears who visit the market can get picked up and dropped off there rather than relying on the waste of taxpayers money that is the FreeTownBus.
Advertise the fact that fares are cheaper than Arriva.
Make use of the friendly staff and advertise their superior customer service.
Look to provide a half hourly or better service possibly using smaller Solo’s or equivalent. Frequent turn-up-and-go mini-bus service would be more attractive to passengers but would cost more in staff wages.

Lyles kept the Longstaff name to seperate it from their main business, they then set about modernising the livery and refurb the interior, it looks good and stands out. Unlike another operator,(SGi) Longstaffs 205 actually runs to a proper timetable, charges proper fares, and has its regular passengers, who let the 202 go by etc.

Lyles of Batley, have added a brand new Optare Metrocity to the Longstaff fleet in a new livery of a darker blue cool. So thats 5 service buses (2 Volvo Eclipses, 1 Optare Excel 2, 1 Optare Tempo and now 1 Metrocity). They've also still got the black 59 plate triaxle Vanhool on hire to as it did the AL2 school run last Friday Morning.
