I was looking through an old Metro timetable book for Leeds in 1986 which someone I know has obtained, and there are a number of services in it that you wouldn't think would have ever existed.
Bolton, yes Bolton was connected by an actual service bus to Leeds, the number 403 ran 2 hourly from Bolton to Leeds via Rochdale and Huddersfield. Also in the same guide, Goole was connected to Leeds via Selby on service 401 up to every hour Mon to Sat and 2 hourly Sundays. A little unknown area called Purston was connected to Leeds every hour on a Saturday via Castleford and Fetherstone, random or what. Within the updates of this timetable guide, a new service was listed to start during the period of this guide running from Leeds to Billingham via Collingham and Middlesborough! I do remember the Peak District services from Huddersfield to places like Crich back in the 80s and 90s. I also remember for just one Summer the number 808 running from Leeds to I think Keswick or defo Windemere via Bradford, Keighley, Skipton and much of the Dales and I believe was sponsored by Dalesbus which is a bit ironic, sponsor a bus that takes custom away from you lol.
Does anybody have any other examples of unusual routes or unusually linked places?

Not long after that, the 508 ran all the way from Leeds to Commons, near Rishworth - there used to be some confused people in Leeds looking for the bus to Halifax. One Summer a weekly 565 ran from Halifax via West Vale and Ainley Top to Denshaw on a Sunday. It didn't return.

686 Fagley to Wyke currently is a bit of a weird one.

South Elmsall to Leeds? I presume that is the example you are referring to Joseph, in your original post I presume. Interesting link between both places

Cough and splutter, even I could not believe what I read in another timetable the same friend has, wait for this one, it's a belter. In 1987, a service 87 ran from Wakefield to Gipton via Middleton and Leeds, it ran hourly too!

There was a Wakefield to Goole service in the 1970s too, went via Normanton, Castleford, Pontefract, Knottingley, then followed I think the current 476 to Selby then the current 401 route to Goole? Just surprised Normanton of all places had a bus to Goole.

I seem to recall that Dalesbus ran an X97 from Leeds to Richmond on a daily or near daily basis during the Summer for a few years but can't remember when, it ran via Harrogate, Ripon, Lightwater Valley, Masham and Leyburn I believe. Another one I've thought of was the 841 from Keighley to Scarborough via Bradford and Bridlington, and not forgetting Bradford enjoyed other direct daily bus services to the east coast for many years too.

Back to the 1960s, there was a Pontefract-Holmfirth service.
Went Pontefract- Ackworth- Wakefield-Clayton West and Holmfirth.
I presume this was cut back in the 1970s, as I couldn't see this service in a 70s timetable. The route number was 85

I forgot about that one, Lancaster City Transport ran it daily for a while before they cut it to Friday to Sunday only and it even had peak period trips too. Keighley and District ran a summer weekend version as well. Anything turned up on the Lancaster City Transport trips including Metroriders. Another fairly unusual service a friend has mentioned to me was the 265 from Leeds to Sheffield the very long way round via Hunslet, Stourton, Woodlesford, Stanley, Wakefield, Sandal, Newmillerdam, Royston, Barnsley and several other places to Sheffield. He believes it ran as late as the mid 70s, with the route split later on into a 265 Sheffield to Barnsley and 465 Barnsley to Leeds, however still using the same bus all the way through with official connections between both routes! He's also remembered a number X34 from Leeds to Rotherham which ran a few workings Monday to Saturday daytime roughly every 2 hours back in the 70s. I've also heard of a normal service bus from Barnsley to Manchester via Denby Dale, New Mill, Holmfirth, Greenfield and Oldham operated by Yorkshire Traction.

Was just about to mention the 200 (wasn't it also numbered 590 at one point, or am i just confusing it with the Skipton Busways/Pinnacle Coaches competitor to the 666 between Keighley & Skipton?) Also, currently, the 876 Dalesbus is an odd one. Who would expect to see 'SEACROFT' on the destination of a bus departing Hawes?

I had some time away from catching buses around Keighley - I don't remember competition on the 666.

Looking at these old timetables, the network must have been complicated, take the 168 for example, there's about 6-7 variations of it example all going different ways, with different numbers
Also going back to the 1940s, there was a Dewsbury to Knottingley service as well.

In 1958 there was a Castleford to Wetherby service as well.
Back in the 1930s, There was a Leeds to Fleetwood bus service every 2 hours from Leeds Bus Station
Leeds-Stanningley-Bradford-Shipley-Salatire-Bingley-Keighley-Colne-Nelson-Burnley-Accrington-Blackburn-Preston-Lytham-St Annes-Blackpool-Cleveleys-Fleetwood
took 4 hours and 25 mins all together

The first one may not have happened as I may be confusing 2 routes but wasn't there a Ossett to Keighley service that Hebble ran, numbered 2? One route which defo ran was a 491 from Tadcaster to Castleford running two journeys from Tadcaster to Castleford (or could be just one) and one from Castleford to Tadcaster. Whilst we are in the Castleford area of sorts, forgot to mention as well that my friends 1987 timetable has a route 441 from Altofts to Leeds direct via Stanley Ferry and Rothwell running AM peak to Leeds twice and PM peak from Leeds twice. Does anybody also remember the 280 that ABC Travel ran from Skipton to Southport? Ran as the current 280 but extended from Preston to Southport.

I can’t find the timetable at the moment to confirm, but I think there was a Saturdays only Halifax to Manchester (or even Bradford to Manchester via Halifax) service in the late 80s run by Yelloway, which ran via Ringstone Reservoir between Halifax and Rishworth before taking the old 562 route and the current 83 route into Manchester.
Then there was the Bradford to Manchester 365 on Saturdays in the 90s, via the 363 route to Huddersfield, a more direct version of the modern 184 route, and then the 83 route into Manchester. I think it just ran Huddersfield to Oldham the rest of the week.

I think it just ran Huddersfield to Oldham the rest of the week. The X12 ran Bradford to Manchester every 2 hours, going briefly hourly at peaks with extra late journeys on a Saturday. It ran daily. I sometimes caught the 1645 from Bradford to Ripponden. It had 2 stops between Bradford and Halifax on the 681 route, then one in each of Sowerby Bridge and Ripponden. It started many years ago as a Ripponden and District Bus Route. I'm not sure who ran it when it stopped in the 70s, but it came back in the mid 80s for several years and was then changed to Leeds - Halifax - Manchester and, at that time, was less useful for me. I don't remember it or a similar service passing Ringstone Reservoir. By the late 80s I was very interested in my local bus routes and could suggest several routes that did...

686 Fagley to Wyke currently is a bit of a weird one. Wyke services ran through from Bingley/Shipley after a 1973 survey identified a desire for a Bingley–Wyke service. After reliability dropped on the longer routes via Shipley, it was decided to swap services around to have a shorter extension across Bradford. This also preserved the Fagley–Odsal link.
