Not surprised given the East Coast shenanigans. Could see a legal challenge coming though. Beardy Branson doesn't like being told no.

What seems unfair for Richard Branson's Virgin Group is that the government have announced this Stagecoach ban after the deadline for West Coast has passed. This will make it too late for Virgin to seek a new backer, meaning they are being thrown off the rails through no direct fault of their own.

It's an announcement that they've submitted non-compliant bids. If Virgin were concerned about this, they should have been checking the joint bid that was submitted. Other companies seem to have been able to submit compliant bids despite Stagecoach's complaints.

Arriva also suffered the same as Stagecoach and were disqualified from the East Mids bid but Stagecoach made the headlines because of the loss on the other franchises they were bidding for like the west coast

Obviously the new operator has a pot of money to take on EMT's pension liabilities and also help to fill a multimillion pound black hole in the pension fund. Stagecoach and Arriva or any other potential operator should not be expected(contrary to what the DFT say or believe) to fill this hole. I suspect that if any of the senior civil servants in involved were leading private companies they would adopt the same attitude if they were bidding for a franchise.

If they can get a franchisee to accept this, as some seem to be happy to, why should they not?
