Overheard a bus driver on the flying tiger services saying that in the coming months they will be introducing contactless card payment readers just like the ones first have installed recently. I don't know if this will be all of Yorkshire tiger or just the Idle depot for the flying tiger services. But if it is the case it will be a positive thing to have especially with the amount of people who ask if they accept card on the airport services. Something to watch out for in the near future.

Speaking to a supervisor on rail coordinator duties, they're going contactless soon.
Also opening their own driving school and gaining some extra E200MMCs for flying tiger.

With Arriva Yorkshire getting new ticket machines around April time does anyone know if Yorkshire Tiger will get the same machines?

YT is a little different to main Arriva fleet as they use Vix machines which were introduced in late 2013 they are quite adept for contactless as stagecoach currently use them across their businesses.

YT is a little different to main Arriva fleet as they use Vix machines which were introduced in late 2013 they are quite adept for contactless as stagecoach currently use them across their businesses. Unfortunately they aren't, the VIX machines used by Yorkshire Tiger cannot do Contactless transactions as they are an earlier model to the ones Stagecoach rolled out and don't have the equipment inside to deal with Contactless Cards. Additionally, whilst VIX can supply a ETM that can read Contactless they don't appear willing/able to provide any of the back office to enable payments to be actually taken (unlike Ticketer used by First, most other companies in the country and being rolled out elsewhere by Arriva) leaving it to the operator to arrange all the banking/processing etc that needs to go along with it, which is why (as far as I can work out from my random discussions and overheard conversations at work) most people are switching to Ticketer as they are the only (or one of the few, there are some suppliers out there I don't think my employers have talked to who may offer something but they don't appear to have penetrated the market consciousness if they do) supplier who will manage setting all that up for you. Even the big groups seem to value that managed system as Go-Ahead have switched from VIX and First were using/trialling VIX machines in East Anglia but also went Ticketer when it came to Contactless roll-out (which was completed much quicker than Stagecoach did since First started some time afterwards and finished nationwide roll-out just before).

And euros won't be accepted anymore If anything, it should be easier to accept Euro’s with the Ticketers, as there is already a software version to allow mixed currency, as loaded onto the First Aircoach machines in Ireland.

Presumbaly though, with Contactless being accepted, there is no need to continue taking Euros?

I wonder in reality how many fares in Euros they actually took. If I was catching an airport bus in another country I’d expect to pay in their local currency.

But would you have the sort of small change needed for a local service bus? (though that does raise the question of what the fare is from the Airport now as to how small the change actually needs to be) This is one of those problem areas for incoming passengers that all they have is the sort of big notes you get from a Bureau de Change which bus drivers don't like receiving for small fares with no way of breaking it easily. An airport is the sort of place where a sales kiosk (or agent for a smaller airport) to sell bus tickets off the bus do deal with this issue would help, and able to provide better travel guidance as well, the issue is that this would need to airport to be proactive in assisting this either with rent or facilitation of contacts. I may be wrong but I think Europe is about in line with the UK in terms of Contactless roll out, though elsewhere in the world it is by no means normal which is an issue that can emerge in London as foreign customers don't have contactless but can't pay on the bus either.

Tiger's policy was that they accept Euro notes, no coins, for single fares and no change was given. Passenger could pay €5 (or €10) for a trip to Leeds which was £3.60. When it was paid in, company took their share, whatever the conversion rate was, and any extra was given back to driver

However everywhere in London that someone is going to arrive you can buy tickets (even if it's a day pass, not a single).
