Thanks for all the contributions to this thread - I do feel a certain amount of satisfaction when I post something which is of general interest!
Craig has done some significant research to list the slowest journeys in the Leeds City Area and at less than 6 mph these are comparable with London, where I believe they are less than 5 mph at peak time. There seems to be no easy answers here and I can understand the public want accuracy from 'real time' information at bus stops and I applaud this - but we must be nearing the limit for acceptable journey times on these peak journeys.
With reference to my own routes 508/681/2 from Northowram to Halifax - I do wish somebody at First would realise the buses all run for the same company and there needs to be improved co-ordination between Halifax and Bradford depots. It is good from Halifax to Northowram during the Mon-Fri off-peak with a regular 15 minute interval, but this is not reflected in the return times with up to 30 minute gaps and it is worse in the evenings.
My suggestion would be:-
* Incresase the frequency of the 681 from 30 mins to 20 mins Mon-Sat Day time; 682 remains hourly evenings
* Reduce the frequency of the 508 to hourly Monday-Friday off peak; keep it at half hourly peaks and as suggested in another post, follow the X6 route via the A647 Stanningley by-pass and back to original route via Armley. I estimate this would save 15 minutes off peak and up to 25 minutes peak making it a more acceptable journey time end to end.
Northowram would still have 4 buses per hour, but there needs to be careful planning between depots to maintain a regular headway.
Any further thoughts on this one?
