Interesting, thanks Mark.
I wonder what the sizing is like is relation to the smaller Optare Metroriders (e.g like 701-713 and 751-3) some of which were at Selby in the late Caldaire days. I think Selby then had shorter versions of the Reeve Burgess bodied Mercs (758-762) slightly after that too around, 1997/8 time.
I think frequency was higher than now in the days of the smaller vehicles.
Going back to the start of "breadvans", Selby depot originally had 9 of the 40 Dormoblie bodied Freight Rover Sherpas introduced by West Riding Buses back in 1987. That reduced to 6 a year later when routes changed. They never proved very popular and had been replaced by 7 Alexander bodied Dodge S56s from United by 1990. Then came the Metroriders in 1995.

The Strata (demonstrator) is 7.75m and has maximum 20 seats plus 2 standees. The smallest Solo SE is 7.25m and has maximum 23 seats plus 9 standees. But the Strata has mgw 5.5t whereas the Solo has mgw 8t, so the Strata is a lot lighter and more economical.
I would be surprised if the 5, 6 and 7 (and maybe the 4, 476 and 493 as well) would need anything bigger than these, although obviously if the bus is full then it may feel more crowded than is comfortable. For the town services, they would be absolutely fine, as most passengers aren't going to be on them for more than 15 minutes or so. I don't know how comfortable they would be on the longer and faster runs, but if they are so much cheaper to run than conventional buses then it's got to be worth looking into.

You'd never get a minibus on the 476 to st. Wilfrids school. Double decker is busy enough at the best of times!
