As a lifelong supporter of getting people back onto trains I`m dismayed about this dispute and the approach Arriva are taking not only against their staff but also their passengers. I was at the launch of the new "Arriva Trains North" and it was impressive, putting aside the new trains on order, the journey so far has been painful. Never a week goes by that there isn`t negative comments about "Arriva Northern" in the press. The aggressive approach used on people queuing to buy tickets at Leeds Station! Our new ticket machine at Headingley had crashed within 3 days!

I always thought that it takes two to make a dispute. In this case management who want/need to make operating changes at any cost and a union who seems determined to hold on to operating procedures that are years out of date. Recently travelled on Austrian railways-they get on well with a driver who operates the doors and a conductor who helps passengers and sells tickets. Why can't that happen in the UK

Part of the problem is that Northern won't guarantee a second safety-critical member of staff on every train.
If the conductor (or 'On Board Supervisor' to use Southern terminology) is not safety trained, he cannot legally assist passengers in the event of an incident requiring evacuation, cannot assist the driver in protecting the train in a derailment (currently, the driver deals with contacting the signalman to inform him of the incident, while the conductor walks back up the line placing detonators on the track to warn any train that may be following) and, most importantly, given the large number of Northern stations with no staff, if the train runs with no second member of staff on board, the company is likely to be in breach of disability access requirements as there would be nobody to assist disabled passengers to board or alight the train. Northern will not pay to staff every station in case a wheelchair passenger wishes to travel and there have been many instances since Southern made their changes of passengers being stranded on board or left behind at a station.

There's strike action tomorrow, resulting in a severely reduced service on all northern railway routes. Generally trains will only run 0800-1800, which is am earlier finish than in the January timetables.
