I've just realised something what should have occured to me at the time, one big thing is missing, their's the number 9 Ring Road service covering the Eastern, Northern, Western and Southern Ring Road up to Middleton, however no through bus from Middleton along the existing 9 route to Colton. Even before the White Rose existed this section had a strong bus link stretching as far as I can remember all the way back to the mid 80s so I wonder when the Southern to Eastern missing link actually started?

Just wanna say a HUGE thank you for all your hard work and effect into informing us the whole Leeds bus and train network. It was an enjoyable topic to read and was so great to go back in time to what services we had in the 80s. An era I grew up in. Can imagine lots of time consumed in doing these many posts. Again thanks and am sure other members will appreciate your time too. Gaz

Interesting to note that the Clayton West branch makes an appearance on the rail map. In hindsight was its closure a mistake? As now, I'm willing to bet the line would be busy from the two stations of Clayton West and Skelmanthorpe and would give the intermediate local Huddersfield stations another service per hour into Huddersfield.
Also interesting is that the last departure for Sheffield on the Penistone Line from Huddersfield is 18.04!! We complain nowadays about night services but 18.04 is dire.

Not to mention no Sunday service - today's not quite every hour service sees some rammed trains.

The 9 was formed into a complete circular route the following year (1981). Because it was then a complete circle running both ways it was necessary to allocate a different number for each direction (clockwise journeys were numbered 8).

Regarding Otley services. West Yorkshire road car had a depot in Otley which is where kwik fit is now next to the fire station. Sent from my GT-N7100 using proboards Don't now if anyone knows but when did the 784 become the x84?

Sent from my GT-N7100 using proboards Don't now if anyone knows but when did the 784 become the x84? I believe the 784 was completely phased out in late 2000 with the introduction of the Overground routes/marketing. Possibly a little later. The 784 was evenings and Sundays only in the late 90s/early 2000s, with slightly different stopping arrangements to the X84.

I'm sure at one point in the late 90's, it was 784 Leeds to Skipton (what became X84) and 780 Leeds to Otley via Pool (what is now X85). The 780 may even have continued to Weston on occasions.

From my memory the 784 was as pointed out the stopping version of the X84 on Sundays and evenings. The 780 also called via Holt Park serving Otley old road. X82 was the peak service of the modern day X85 with extensions to Weston. I don't believe there was any evening services into Pool. You had to change in Otley for a pool service. 780 shared the Otley Old Road with service 93, whilst 96 served Spen Lane and Iverson drive. The 96 would then re-join Otley Old Road with both the 93/96 doing circular services around Tinshill/Cookridge. When First overhauled the Leeds network, the 93 turned into the 96A and instead of terminating/beginning at Leeds Rail Station (like the 93 did) it would terminate/begin at Leeds City Bus Station - as part of the "sky line" colour. It was at this point the 93 stopped serving Otley Old Road and instead as the 96A served Spen lane between the Ring Road/Otley Old Road. A few years later this was all changed with the 96 extended into Holt Park, cutting out the Iverson Drive part etc and went direct on Otley Old Road, as present 6 route, then re-numbered into the 6.

Some other 93/96 memories (totally off the original topic of the thread now but nostalgia is like that!):: - In 1997, Taylors ran a 96A that ran (as far as I remember) via the route of the current 6 to Holt Park, except it started at Infirmary Street. - In the late 90s, the 93 and 96 extended across the city centre to Beeston (via the current 10 route), with an evening and Sunday extension to Cottingley via Elland Road. - After they were changed to terminate at the bus station, there was a short period at some point around mid 2001 or so when evening and Sunday journeys were numbered 93C and 96C, running via City Square on their way to the bus station.

Completely but that is the point of thread once you discuss things. 96A by Taylors cannot even think of them? What was their livery like? Wasn't there a point where we had 93/93A, 93B, 93C and the 96/ 96A, 96B and 96C? I guess the B was for Beeston, C for the Cottingley which then changed over to City Square? Did they run back via City Square? And how did the 96 go to Beeston from Leeds Bus station?

K Line livery blue/white using Leyland Nationals and DAF/Ikarus
I think “Big Foot Buses” ran versions of the 1 and 96 up Holt Park way as well at a similar time

And how did the 96 go to Beeston from Leeds Bus station? I don’t remember all those variants. My in-depth knowledge starts from mid-97 onwards when I was getting ready to start university in Leeds and I have no memory of all of those (EDIT: actually, now you mention it, maybe they were numbered like that for a short while!). The C variants via City Square: I don’t recall whether it was a one-way loop or not. When they terminated at the bus station, the 1 took over the Beeston and Cottingley section. And that’s the way it stayed (minus Cottingley more recently) until the 10 started.

I know the 93 never terminated at the Bus Station unless it was as you mention that city loop on an Evening and Sundays. I can imagine them running the 93 back through the City Square whilst the 96 did one "giant" loop - via normal route of Eastgate and Headrow. Would love for someone to have the many timetables published in the late 90's and into the early 00's. Before First and Overground come with a simpler network which looking back at the variations of 20 years ago seems much more boring, yet efficient and simpler. K Line livery blue/white using Leyland Nationals and DAF/Ikarus I think “Big Foot Buses” ran versions of the 1 and 96 up Holt Park way as well at a similar time Was this around the same time that Black Prince was operating competition on the University, Bodington Hall to Leeds market? With the 63B?

I moved to Beeston in the mid-1990s. From memory, during the day we had the 93 and 96 every 20 minutes (every 10 minutes combined), running the route of what was the 1 before the split last year (now the 10 and 1), but doing the Cookridge loops instead of running to Holt Park. There was also the 20 which came up from Cottingley via Beeston Turning Circle, down Tempest Road, Dewsbury Road, Meadow Road, Briggate then... I can't remember. It either went off to Moortown, or there was also a service 1 which did the same and then ran to Holt Park. These changes happened in the early 1990s, if I recall right.
Eventually we got the 1 back, running Holt Park to Beeston, with evening and Sunday extensions to Cottingley.
Bigfoot (and others) ran odd services such as the 68 to Cardinal Estate (then to White Rose), including Sundays; and I think a 96B, Monday to Saturday daytime. I might have an old map or timetable in the archive - will have a look.

I haven’t got the timetables, not for Leeds anyway, but I will have all the Metro maps. Of course some short lived services and variations may have been and gone in between map issues

I'll dig out the timetables when I get a few minutes. I can't promise them all, but I should have a good selection from then.

My memory of the 20 is it terminated in the city centre, but at Cottingley it interworked with the 2, which then ran on to Roundhay via White Rose, Dewsbury Road and the current route.

[Was this around the same time that Black Prince was operating competition on the University, Bodington Hall to Leeds market? With the 63B? Yes, Black Prince had the 63B (Royal Armouries - Leeds - Bodington Hall), serving the Royal Armouries partly for the Clarence Dock halls of residence next door. One evening journey per hour was a 63A (Halton Dial - Leeds - Bodington Hall), tacking a tendered run to Halton Dial via East End Park on to the commercial Bodington Hall leg. Taylors ran the previously mentioned 96A and also a 1B, Infirmary Street to Holt Park, calling at Bodington Hall on the way. Bigfoot were around the year before (1996) I think. Were they the same company, even?
