The present stopping pattern dates from May this year. Before May there was a 2155 call at Stalybridge on a service to Leeds but there was only an hourly service from Piccadilly.

That should have said the 2142 Piccadilly (2121 ex Airport ) doesn't call at Stalybridge. Ah right, hasn't ever called AFAIK.

The 2120 Manchester Airport to Leeds/Newcastle called at Stalybridge at 2155. Sort of handy for an evening game at Bower Fold. If you could get a lift to the station.

Electrification back on................. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-34402592The electrification of two railway lines is to be restarted after the projects were halted so a review could be carried out, Network Rail has said. Work on the TransPennine Express Railway - between Manchester and York - and Midland Mainline - from London to Sheffield - were stopped in June. Sir Peter Hendy, chair of Network Rail, said the "temporary pause" had "given us the space to develop a better plan". Transport minister Patrick McLoughlin has approved the decision. The TransPennine upgrade is expected to provide capacity for six "fast or semi-fast trains" per hour between Manchester, Leeds and York , reducing journey times by up to 15 minutes.

I little bit more detail in the ITV report: www.itv.com/news/calendar/update/2015-09-30/transpennine-electrification-works-to-resume/The new plan will deliver faster journey times and significantly more capacity between Manchester, Leeds and York. The upgrade is expected to provide capacity for six fast or semi-fast trains per hour, take up to 15 minutes off today’s journey time between Manchester and York and be complete by 2022. When the work is finished, the whole route from Liverpool to Newcastle (via Manchester, Leeds and York) will be fully electrified and journey times will be significantly reduced compared to today’s railway. New Northern and TransPennine rail franchise awards will be announced before the end of the year. The new franchises will deliver new train carriages and remove out-dated Pacer trains; introduce free WiFi on trains; and offer a one-third increase in capacity with 200 additional services on weekdays and Saturdays and 300 more train services on Sundays.

Rocketing rail electrification costs unacceptable, say MPs Could this be a case of the wrong type of pound coins in the treasury rather than leaves on the lines..................... www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-34868859It added there was still "far too much uncertainty" on costs and timescales for the TransPennine and Midland Main Line projects, which have been pushed back into the 2020s

The TransPennine Express contract is retained by First. On the Huddersfield line, there will be an extra hourly Leeds - Manchester train. This will call at Dewsbury.

I assume this is the extension announced as part of the award press release, which is the existing Liverpool - Newcastle service extended North (to be an electric service, so unless they're going to wait for the wires to go up between Leeds and York, it'll have to start off with 185s)

There's also more information in the current (January ) edition of modern railways. New trains include bi-mode, so these would be suitable on lines with partial electrification .

I can hear the announcement now, that the next train is delayed due to it being stuck in the wrong type of mode. Or How many fitters does it take to fix a failed bi-mode train? Answer 4. One to check any for mechanical failures, one to check for any electrical failures one to check for any bi-mode interface failures and the forth to drive the recovery locomotive sent to drag it in.............................

Quick Question: I thought all class 170s have moved onto Chiltern however I saw a pair of them yesterday. Are they all still at Trans pennine express?

I thought all the 170 turbostars had gone to Chiltern, but some were being leased back to TPE.

All TPE 170's are now officially Chiltern's units, however, a handful are subleased back to TPE as Chiltern don't need them all until the Oxford service begins.

They have for a while.
That's why there are 2 loco hauled diagrams on the Carlisle - Barrow -Lancaster coast route, to free up units.

At the time of this announcement ( www.gov.uk/government/news/new-plan-to-secure-rail-services-for-the-north ) the plan was for 5x170's to transfer to Chiltern last May (which i believe they did) and for TPE to cover for them by using 185's on Hull services and hire 156's from Northern for Airport to Blackpool services with the remaining 4 to go in Feb 2016. Whether that is still the plan (after all the 170's will need to go earlier than the start of Chiltern's Oxford service to give enough time for them to be refurbished and converted to Class 168's) and if so how TPE will cover the loss of the 4 remaining units is to be seen.

Hot on the heels of the Hitachi bi-mode order, TPE have announced on their website, they have ordered a fleet of 5-car electric CAF Civity units (similar to Arriva Rail Northern's) class 331/2 units. Also announced is an order for CAF built coaches which are to be hauled by hired in DRS class 68 loco's. From what i've gleaned from some rail forums, it would appear the Civity's are to be used on the new Liverpool-Glasgow services, also Liverpool-Scarborough (when electrification completed). Once they enter service, the 350/4's will depart (London Midland) looking their likely destination. The loco hauled services will run Liverpool-Newcastle, and the Hitachi ATP's are scheduled for the full Liverpool-Newcastle-Edinburgh service. Once all new stock is in place 22 class 185's will return to the leasor. So far no interest has been registered by the TOC's in taking these redundant 185's.

Further to the above post, 12 Civity 5-car EMU's have been ordered, and 13 5-carriage rake's for the Loco-hauled services.
